Jaguar Land Rover chases self-driving car ambitions with major hiring spree

Jaguar Land Rover, the high-spec automotive manufacturer owned by Tata Motors Limited (NYSE:TTM), is on a hiring drive targeting tech workers who have been laid off in the bear market that hit the European and global industry in the past year.

The company intends to recruit over 100 engineers to focus on its self-driving car ambition at newly built hubs in Germany, Italy and Spain to complement existing centres in the US, Hungary, Ireland, the UK, China and India.

Almost every big-tech firm, from Google parent Alphabet to Meta (formerly Facebook) has implemented sweeping workforce reductions in the face of adverse, inflationary market conditions and crumbling market valuations.

Mass firings have led to a glut of talented engineers, to the benefit of firms seeking to expand their in-house expertise.

Thomas Müller, product engineering director at Jaguar Land Rover, said: “We are harnessing talent in autonomous technologies around the world to develop new autonomous technologies for our future products, which will deliver a truly modern luxury experience for our clients.”

Jag Land Rover is partnering with GPU maker and artificial intelligence giant Nvidia to develop the “computer brains and nervous systems” for luxury Jaguars and Land Rovers launching in 2025 and beyond.

Nvidia has been attempting to expand into the automotive sector for a while.

According to the Silicon Valley-headquartered company’s latest earnings statement, automotive revenues were up 86% year on year, though at US$251, constituted only 4% of total revenues.

Jag’s tie up with Nvidia could provide a significant boost to these ambitions.
