Arecor Therapeutics PLC (AIM:AREC), the UK biopharmaceutical group, has been granted patents in India and the US, protecting its proprietary formulations of differentiated biopharmaceutical products.
The company said they will add to the group's extensive patent portfolio, which protects its proprietary diabetes portfolio, and showcase the potential of the company's Arestat technology in the development of enhanced formulations of high-value biologics.
The Indian patent covers Arecor's clinical insulin candidates, AT247 and AT278, which are designed to speed up insulin absorption post-injection, thereby enabling more effective management of blood glucose levels for people with diabetes.
The two US patents protect the novel formulation space enabling high-concentration adalimumab products with excellent stability.
Adalimumab is a blockbuster monoclonal antibody product sold by AbbVie under the brand name Humira.
Using its Arestat technology, Arecor has developed novel formulations that overcome the technical challenges of creating a high-concentration version of the drug.
Dr Jan Jezek, Arecor’s chief scientific officer, said that "these patents further reinforce the strength of Arecor's technology and expertise in valuable commercial areas such as inflammatory diseases and diabetes”.
