Amazon UK strikes may 'escalate' as workers plan next steps

Striking British Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) employees are meeting today to plan a potential "escalation" of industrial action.

Last month, workers at the online retail giant's warehouse in Coventry staged a walkout, the first time Amazon workers in the UK had done so.

The 350 workers, who are fighting for better pay, will meet with representatives from the GMB union today to organise the next steps and plan another strike.

“Amazon workers in Coventry have already made history, but they are hungry for more,” said Amanda Gearing, GMB’s senior organiser, in a statement.

The initial outrage was sparked when the company offered a 50p wage increase to staff’s £10.50 hourly wages last summer, a 5% increase when UK CPI inflation was over 10%.

The trade union had initially asked for £15 per hour for employees but said it had not yet entered into formal negotiations with the US company yet.

“GMB urges Amazon bosses to get round the table and negotiate a pay rise that will stop further strikes,” said Gearing.

Amazon shares are trading at US$100.3, up 3.5% since the strikes began.
