Genedrive PLC (AIM:GDR), the molecular diagnostics company, jumped 29% to 32.2p after telling investors it received a NICE recommendation.
The UK’s National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recommended that Genedrive’s MT-RNR1 ID kit can be used by the NHS following a review of evidence, it said in a statement.
The kit can “quickly and accurately” identify babies with a primary genetic variant who may be at risk of hearing loss if given aminoglycoside antibiotics.
Currently, there is no available test that provides results as quickly to inform decisions on whether to prescribe the antibiotic in an emergency.
Genedrive said the long-term savings to the NHS associated with subsequent hearing loss care could be “substantial.”
