ChatGPT, an artificial intelligence (AI) tool which interacts in a conversational way, was used by a judge in a Colombian court.
Juan Manuel Padilla confirmed he used the tool, which has gained popularity in recent weeks, when deciding if an autistic child’s insurance should cover the costs of his medical treatment.
According to the Guardian, Padilla’s use of the tool has caused some stir in the Colombian city of Cartagena.
Padilla asked the chatbot: “Is an autistic minor exonerated from paying fees for their therapies?”
In response, ChatGPT said: “Yes, this is correct. According to the regulation in Colombia, minors diagnosed with autism are exempt from paying fees for their therapies.”
Padilla, according to the Guardian, defended his use of the technology, suggesting it could make Colombia’s legal system much more efficient.
The extent of what ChatGPT can do has been debated ever since its introduction to the public, with the full breadth of its powers unknown yet.
However, it is believed it may be used to replace employees in certain roles, including customer service and content creation, for example.
