BT rolling out fast broadband 'like fury' after week of strikes

BT Group PLC (LSE:BT.A) said its ultra high-speed internet roll-out has now reached 9.5mln homes, adding it is building like "fury” to reach its 25mln target.

The telco said it is upgrading internet services at a rate of 62,000 premises every week, with connections back on track again after eight days of strikes.

“We are really ramping it up now, despite the economic challenges. We are going to put our foot down,” said Philip Jansen, chief executive.

Competition is fierce, however, with rivals such as VM02 and smaller service providers or altnets also rapidly building out networks leading to fears of over-capacity.

Jansen made the comments after BT maintained its guidance today after third-quarter revenues fell.

“Despite a challenging economic backdrop…we continue to accelerate our investments in the UK’s leading next-generation networks,” Jansen added.

"Our 5G mobile network now reaches 60% of the UK," he added.

The CEO is in the final year of his contract but added he has no plans of moving on yet.

BT is also cutting costs to provide £3bln in annualised savings by the end of the 2025 financial year, Jansen stated.

Shares were up 2.2% at 126.7p.
