Arecor Therapeutics PLC (AIM:AREC) said phase I data from its ultra-concentrated, ultra-rapid-acting insulin candidate, AT278, has been published in the American Diabetes Association journal, Diabetes Care.
The study showed that AT278 demonstrated faster insulin absorption compared to the gold-standard insulin, NovoRapid, with a five-fold increase in concentration.
Currently, there are no concentrated rapid-acting insulin products available. This means that AT278 has the potential to be the first such product, helping people with diabetes better manage their blood glucose levels, Arecor said.
"Publication of the AT278 clinical trial in this prestigious journal highlights the significance of this clinical data and the need for our next-generation insulins to bring improved treatment options to people living with diabetes to simplify and improve their blood glucose management," noted chief executive Sarah Howell in a statement.
With around 537 million people living with diabetes worldwide, 56 million of which are insulin users, there is a growing need for improved treatment options.
AT278 has the potential to become the standard gold insulin for people with high daily insulin needs and a critical enabler in the development of the next generation of miniaturised insulin delivery systems, CEO Howell reckons.
