Lloyds Banking Group PLC (LSE:LLOY), Barclays PLC (LSE:BARC) and the UK’s other big banks are being targeted by an environmentalist campaign led by Comic Relief founder and screenwriter Richard Curtis and supported by British actors and celebrities like Stephen Fry and Emma Thomson.
The campaign, titled 'Make My Money Matter', calls on UK banking institutions to “stop financing fossil fuel expansion”.
It has sent letters to the chief executives of the banks, according to a report in the Guardian, as it attempts to leverage public awareness and the sentiments of the UK’s high street banking customers to pressure the bankers into making a change.
The campaigners highlight claims, based on research by another activist group called ShareAction, that in 2021 the UK’s ‘big five’ banks provided some US$16bn of financing across 50 large oil and gas companies that were expanding production.
