FTSE 100 trending lower after record borrowing announcement - Market Report

The FTSE 100 is trending lower this morning, spooked perhaps by the latest UK public borrowing figures from the ONS, that show consumer borrowing hit £27.4bn in December – the highest figure for the Christmas period since records began in 1993.

Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) has had a rocky start to the day too, revealing that it will significantly reduce its US$59bn worth of alternative investments as it continues to seek ways to cut costs.

More negative headlines over at Twitter as well, with the company apparently facing legal action from the King’s Crown Estate over rent arrears at its London headquarters.

Microsoft has confirmed it will be investing $10bn into ChatGPT creator OpenAI.

And among the small caps, fertiliser company Harvest Minerals saw its share price up 5% after saying it exceeded 2022 sales guidance.

That’s all for this morning, today’s market report was written by Josh Lamb and presented by me, Thomas Warner.
