The FTSE 100 opened higher again today, continuing a strong run of form after reports that the UK economy grew unexpectedly in November.
November saw growth of 0.1%, alongside an unrevised 0.5% in October, boosting hopes that the UK could escape a technical recession. A sharp fall in September saw the three months to November total a 0.3% decrease in the economy, however.
Also in London, the Bank of England concluded its emergency market intervention on Thursday, following September’s mini budget. It has now sold back some £19.3bn worth of gilts to the market - purchased after the announcement – reportedly turning a £3.8bn profit.
Among the UK’s large caps, Taylor Wimpey has seen its sales hit amid housing market uncertainty, with its order book down from £2.5bn to £1.9bn at the end of the year. Its profit guidance remains unchanged.
ITV has started the year on a more positive note, reporting viewership has spiked after the release of its new streaming service ITVX, which subsequently saw its share price jump.
In small caps, Caledonia Mining has said it expects this year to be its best yet, following record production in 2022.
