Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ:AMZN) is planning to close a trio of British warehouses: in Hemel Hempstead, Doncaster and Gourock, Scotland.
The three warehouses employ around 1,200 workers in total, but the US tech giant said it will offer displaced employees roles at other locations.
“We’re always evaluating our network to ensure it fits our business needs and to improve the experience for our employees and customers,” a spokesperson for Amazon said.
“All employees affected by the site closure consultations, will be offered the opportunity to transfer to other facilities,” they added.
Steve Garelick, regional organiser for the GMB trade union in Hemel Hempstead, responded: “Decamping to Luton, Dunstable or Milton Keynes isn't as practical as you might think.
“This is the thin end of the wedge for the local area.”
The news comes a week after Amazon announced plans to cut 18,000 jobs, beginning in January.
The US-based company also announced hopes to open two major fulfilment centres in Peddimore, West Midlands and Stockton-on-Tees, County Durham.
The new facilities will apparently provide 2,500 more jobs over the next three years.
Amazon, which appointed new chief executive Andy Jassy in July, has seen its share price fall by 45% in the past year - around 20% lower than NASDAQ's performance in the same period.
