Moderna mulls Covid vaccine price hike as infections rise

Moderna Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MRNA) is mulling a hike in the US price of its Covid-19 vaccine to between US$110 to US$130 a shot as government contracts come to an end, chief executive Stephane Bancel said in an interview yesterday.

That would be well above previous guidance, which had indicated a range of US$64-US$100 per jab.

Pfizer, which is the other main supplier of mRNA-based Covid vaccines, has already said it plans a price hike to US$100 to US$130 a shot.

"I would think this type of pricing is consistent with the value," Bancel told the Wall Street Journal.

Moderna has already said it expects a sharp reduction in vaccine sales in 2023.

Predictions for its Covid revenues in 2023 are now US$5bn, though this is a base figure, said the pharma company, and does not include possible new deals in the US, Europe and Japan.

New strains of the virus emanating from China have seen cases spike across the US recently, with fears in Europe that it is only a matter of time before infections here rise as well.

In November, Moderna predicted its 2022 Covid vaccine sales would be between US$18-19bn, down from a previous forecast of US$22bn and similar to revenues of US$17.7bn in 2021.
