British Airways apologises for delays caused by Lufthansa's pilot system

British Airways, owned by International Consolidated Airlines, apologised to passengers after a technical issue caused delays to flights to and from the US and Caribbean.

The issue was caused by Lufthansa's system, with disruptions in Denver, New York and Miami among others.

LIDO, a flight planning system, is used by pilots to plan routes and navigate weather and is popular among many airlines including British Airways' sister airline Iberia.

“Our flights due to depart the USA tonight are currently delayed due to a technical issue with our third-party flight planning supplier, which we are urgently investigating,” British Airways said in a statement.

“We’re sorry for any disruption this will cause to our customers’ plans, our aim is for these flights to depart as quickly as possible.”

The issue did not impact short-haul flights or flights that had already departed.

Affected passengers took to Twitter to vent their frustrations, with British actor and model Liz Hurley complaining of 20-hour delays with no food, water, taxis or hotels offered by the airline.

Other passengers also complained of a lack of communication from the airline, with many unsure what the issue was or when it would be resolved.

However, British Airways later released a statement to say that the issue had been resolved.

“Our teams have now resolved a temporary issue that affected some of our long-haul flight planning systems overnight, which resulted in delays to our schedule. We’re sorry for the disruption caused to our customers’ travel plans.”
