Amazon linked to Manchester United in new report

Amazon Inc has been linked to a potential takeover of Manchester United in a new report.

First broken by The Athletic, Amazon is said to be close to the talks over buying the Premier League club for a fee in excess of £5bn.

The Athletic was also one of the first to break the news that the Glazer family, who have owned the club since 2005, were putting the club up for sale before it was shortly confirmed by the club in a statement last month.

Amazon already has its toes dipped into football with a shirt sleeve sponsorship deal for Italian Serie A table-toppers Napoli, while also holding broadcast rights to some Premier League fixtures.

A spokesperson for Amazon said, “Amazon declined to comment on rumour and speculation.”

Recently, Apple has also been rumoured to be mulling a bid for Manchester United, although Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who owns the chemical company Ineos, has been the most strongly linked.

Ratcliffe has previously expressed an interest in buying the club he has supported his whole life, having even spoken to the Glazers this summer over a buyout, although it was believed they were not open to a deal at the time.
