Production since the start of 2019 has averaged 85,100 barrels oil equivalent per day, the company revealed.

The oiler has now pitched its full-year production guidance at 75,000 to 80,000 boepd, extending the top of the range from 75,000 boepd.

Cost guidance, meanwhile, remains unchanged – with operating expenditure anticipated at US$13 per barrel and the capital budget seen at US$340mln.

Net debt presently stands at around US$2.25bn and the company is forecasting that it will be reduced by US$250-350mln over 2019, based on current oil prices.

"We continue to deliver ahead of plan,” said Tony Durrant, Premier chief executive.

“Production and free cash flow are ahead of forecast for 2019 and, consequently, we are reducing our debt faster than anticipated.

He added: “At the same time, we are making good progress on our growth projects.

“We look forward to concluding the Zama appraisal campaign and to spudding Tolmount East, which has the potential to deliver a step change in value to the already high return Tolmount Main project."

Tolmount

The Tolmount project is the next significant growth project in the pipeline. It is progressing on schedule and on budget, Premier said. It is 50% owned by Premier and will yield some 58,000 boepd once production reaches the peak rate. First gas from Tolmount is anticipated in 2020.

A new appraisal well is due to test the Tolmount East resource area in July.

Meanwhile, in Mexico, the company expects to complete an appraisal programme on the Zama discovery in June. Results from the high profile discovery will likely be a key point of focus for investors.

The Zama-2ST1 well, a sidetrack off the previously drilled Zama-2 well, yielded a combined flow rate of 7,426 barrels of oil per day from two separate tests within a perforated 248 feet zone.

Production rates were, however, restricted to manage risks of sand production and Premier highlighted that analysis of the result indicates “a prolific reservoir”.

In all, the Zama-2 sidetrack cut some 873 feet of gross oil bearing reservoir, achieving a 70% net-pay-to-gross-pay ratio.

"We are very pleased by the productivity demonstrated by this well and we continue to collect further evidence that Zama has a world-class reservoir with excellent quality and well-connected sands,” said Tony Durrant, Premier chief executive.

“This has positive implications for the expected ultimate recovery from the field and will help us to optimise the field development.”

The drill rig will now move on to the location of the Zama-3 appraisal well, which aims to confirm lateral reservoir continuity and quality in the southern part of the field.

Premier highlighted that the drill programme is ahead of schedule and under budget.

It holds a 20% non-operated interest in Block 7 which, in the shallow water Sureste Basin in the Gulf of Mexico, is host to the Zama discovery.

Prior to appraisal drilling, Zama was estimated to contain some 1.2bn to 1.8bn barrels of oil-in-place, with recoverable resource estimates pitched at that time at 400-800mln barrels.

In Tuesday morning’s deals, Premier shares moved 2.88% or 2.92p higher to trade at 104.42p.

The rise of these independents comes as the region has been progressively weaned off its dependency on multinational majors like BP PLC (LON:BP.) and Royal Dutch Shell PLC (LON:RDSA).

Nowadays, the ten largest operators in the mature basin account for just over half the North Sea's output, reduced from around two-thirds a decade ago.

London-listed firms like Premier Oil PLC (LON:PMO) and EnQuest PLC (LON:ENQ), along with several private-equity backed exploration and production companies, increasingly drive growth activity.

Premier and EnQuest for example between them brought on the Catcher and Kraken fields which in 2018 yielded around 66,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day (boepd) and 31,427 boepd respectively. Both companies have also greenlit projects that aim to boost production further in the coming years.

It is reflective of a broader renaissance for the North Sea, albeit time and new investment will determine whether this trend can be sustained.

Output rises after 14 years of decline

In a report released on Wednesday, industry trade body Oil & Gas UK (OGUK) said production in the UK continental shelf (UKCS), which includes the North Sea areas where the UK has mineral rights, has increased 20% over the last five years after 14 years of decline.

The region has also been punching above its weight with around 485mln boe discovered so far from exploration wells drilled in 2018, a similar level to Norway but with 20 fewer wells.

And the activity shows little sign of slowing, with more new projects approved in 2018 than the previous three years combined, unlocking over £3.3bn of new investment and over 400mln boe of new reserves, with similar levels expected for 2019.

Exploration is, naturally, the key to future growth - as new discoveries are always needed to replace produced reserves and to stave off the decommissioning of vital infrastructure.

Companies such as Hurricane Energy PLC (LON:HUR), i3 Energy PLC (LON:I3E), The Parkmead Group PLC (LON:PMG), and Independent Oil & Gas PLC (LON:IOG) have shown recently the benefits of successful exploration and appraisal projects.

Each has advanced and matured projects which can deliver future phases of growth for the North Sea.

£200bn needed to avoid losing “generation of productive life”

However, despite the uptick in production, OGUK said the UKCS would need around £200bn of investments to add “a generation of productive life” that would provide significant opportunities for E&P and supply companies in the sector.

Deirdre Michie, OGUK’s chief executive, said that as the UKCS met around 60% of the primary UK oil and gas demand in 2018, and the industry was “critical for security of energy supply”.

The OGUK report also highlighted that the recent downturn in commodity prices, with Brent crude dropping 29% in the last five years to US68 a barrel, had heightened investor caution and forced E&P firms to instead focus on cost reductions and operational improvements.

“Our report finds an industry that’s getting better at what it does, getting smarter in how it does it and is well positioned to deliver attractive returns on investment within this environment, maintaining our global competitiveness,” Michie said.

She added, however, that challenges remained across parts of the supply chain and if resources and capabilities were to remain in the UK, there would need to be “a competitive proposition for supply chain companies to invest in too”.

The company’s financial results statement, released today, confirmed record production at 80,500 barrels of oil per day up from 75,000 boepd in the prior year.

It highlighted that new North Sea field Catcher saw its plateau rate increase to 66,000 boepd and during 2018 the Tolmount field development was greenlighted setting up an additional 58,000 boepd of gross production – a four well development drill programme is slated to start by mid-2020, meanwhile, an appraisal of an expansion area takes place this year.

Similarly, the company is advancing the appraisal of the large Zama discovery offshore Mexico.

Premier, meanwhile, revealed that it intends to progress its financing plans for the Sea Lion field in the Falklands.

Sea Lion currently ranks as Premier’s largest fully appraised un-developed asset, and, it had previously planned to rely on new partnering to support the project financing.

Today, Premier highlighted that potential key contractors to the project have agreed to provide some US$400mln of financing and the ‘critical path’ to Sea Lion’s final investment decision is on securing a senior debt funding structure, including a combination of export credit financing and project bank funding.

It highlighted that a formal loan application for Sea Lion project funding is due to be submitted in the second quarter.

Premier repeated, meanwhile, that it is still the company’s preference to bring in a partner in order to “optimise its level of participation in the project”.

Financial results

Whilst growth project evidently remain on Premier’s agenda, the financial results reveal a profitable and cash generative business capable of servicing the company’s not insignificant debt-pile – which at US$2.3bn at the end of December had reduced by US$393mln over the course of the year.

Premier reported a US$133.4mln profit, representing a notable improvement from the US$253.8mln loss in 2017.

Earnings (EBITDAX) was marked at US$882.3mln, up 50% from US$589.7mln in the preceding year.

Cash flow from operations amounted to US$777.2mln which was up 64% from the US$475.3mln generated in 2017.

Whilst debt was reduced by US$393mln, some US$181mln was the result of an accelerated conversion of convertible bonds.

Looking to the current financial year, Premier is giving production guidance of 75,000 boepd which corresponds to 5% growth after adjustment for asset disposals.

In the year to date, meanwhile, the production rate has averaged 89,000 boepd.

The company noted that cash margins are expected to be around 30% higher at comparable commodity pricing.

"2018 saw higher production, positive free cash flow and a return to profitability,” chief executive said Tony Durrant.

“The group is ahead of plans to restore balance sheet strength and remains focused on consistently delivering free cash flows.

“Growth projects such as Tolmount, Zama and Sea Lion, together with promising exploration in Mexico and Indonesia, are being advanced within a disciplined financial framework."
