The contract will incorporate cybersecurity software from BATM’s Celare subsidiary in addition to networking applications from its other subsidiary NGSoft.

Dr Zvi Marom, BATM’s chief executive, said the contract award had followed a “thorough, very demanding and lengthy proof-of-concept trial” where the customer had tested several solutions from major suppliers before choosing BATM’s offer.

“Receiving this contract from the armed forces is also validation that our solution can meet the most stringent security requirements. We look forward to delivering this project and to expanding our relationship with this customer."

The group, which operates both bio-medical and cyber divisions, said it had entered the new year with a “substantially higher order book” compared to the year before as well as increased visibility on earnings from longer-term contracts and projects that were expected to be completed during 2019.

For the year just gone, the group reported adjusted earnings (EBITDA) of US$4.9mln, up from US$2.2mln in 2017, while revenues increased to US$119.6mln from US$107.1mln.

Revenues from the bio-medical division rose 8.2% to US$62.1mln while the networking and cyber arm jumped 16.4% to US$57.5mln.

BATM’s chief executive, Dr Zvi Marom, said that the diagnostic and eco-med units within the bio-med segment had taken “large steps” forward in 2018 and growth was also expected in the current year.

The segment has already started on the front foot in the new year, having inked its first international contract with a Philippine firm on Tuesday.

For the cyber division, Marom added that the segment had won around US$13.5mln in contracts last year and further wins were anticipated in 2019.

"These full-year results are very significant in the history of BATM. They not only reflect the excellent operational results achieved this year but also provide a guide to what we are capable of in the next few years.”

In a note to clients, BATM’s broker Shore Capital said the 2018 results had come in ahead of their own forecasts and upped their 2019 expectations in response to the company’s bullish outlook.

Analysts added that the company retained “substantial financial resources” in the form of US$31.7mln in net cash and investments which they expected to be used to fund organic development across its intellectual property base.

Shares were up 2.8% at 47.8p.

The group, which operates both bio-medical and cyber divisions, said the contract was worth around US$1.5mln, with 40% paid upfront, and would be delivered in 2019.

WATCH: BATM clinches another follow-on cybersecurity contract from defence department customer

The deal with the Philippine firm, which is part of a major food manufacturing group, involves the installation of BATM’s agri-waste treatment solution in a poultry processing facility to allow the safe treatment of remains and generate proteins.

BATM said the advantage of its solution was that the treatment of the remains would be carried out on site without the use of hazardous chemicals and without producing environmental damage.

Dr Zvi Marom, chief executive of BATM, said that since launching the agri-waste offering the company had received “increasing interest from an international clientele” and that they looked forward to “signing more contracts with other companies in the group during the year”.

In a note to clients, analysts at the company’s broker Shore Capital said the win was “significant” for BATM’s Celitron division in agriculture and provided evidence that the technology was “becoming a referenceable and proven technology solution to an important area of environmental hazard”.

“BATM has also utilised this technology in the medical and pharmaceutical field with over 400 medical waste units deployed to date. We see equal significant potential in agriculture.”

In mid-morning trading Tuesday, BATM shares were down 0.2% at 46.5p.

The firm, which operates in the bio-medical and networking technology space, said the conditional investment would total up to US$30mln, with the initial US$14.5mln to be funded by the end of March and the remaining US$15.5mln to be funded by the end of 2020, subject to certain milestones being achieved.

WATCH: BATM's Zvi Marom outlines $30mln molecular diagnostics investment agreement

Ador itself is owned by BATM and medical equipment group Gamida for Life, both of which would provide US$4mln of the investment funds with the rest funded by what the company said were “leading” US medical investors as well as real estate investment group Puma Brandenburg Investments.

The investment is focused on the commercialisation of Ador’s first product, the NATlab reader, a rapid-results diagnostic system that is currently in final engineering ahead of in-hospital testing in the US and Europe.

BATM said it was intended that NATlab receive regulatory approval to enable commercialisation in 2020, while the investment itself would be used to build several systems with customers to test, develop, and certify tests for different diseases using NATlab, as well as for sales and marketing purposes.

Once the total investment is completed, BATM said it would own 30.2% of a new company, NewCo, which will own 100% of Ador.

Dr Zvi Marom, chief executive of BATM, said the investment reflected the “tremendous potential” of the molecular diagnostics solution and that the funding once completed would allow the commercialisation of NATlab to be accelerated.

In afternoon trading, BATM shares were 1.7% higher at 47.60p.

In a note to clients, analysts at ‘house’ broker Shore Capital said: “In our view, this announcement is further confirmation of the progress being made across BATM’s intellectual property portfolio as discussed at the company’s investor day last November.”

• Swing to positive earnings in latest half year What BATM Advanced Communications does

BATM Advanced Communications Ltd (LON:BVC) provides solutions for networking and cyber security as well as for bio-medical and bio-waste treatment through its two operating divisions.

The networking and cyber division offers telecoms and network solutions, focusing on advanced software and cybersecurity, to tier 1 businesses and governments worldwide.

The bio-medical division focuses on the development and provision of diagnostic lab equipment as well as products to treat biological waste products from the medical, agricultural, and pharmaceutical sectors.

The group is listed on the main board of the London Stock Exchange and is headquartered in Israel with offices in North America, Europe, and the Far East.

What it owns

In the networking and cyber division, BATM owns three entities;

• Telco Systems – focuses on high-performance telecom networks and communications systems

• NGsoft – develops and maintains digital systems such as websites and mobile apps as well as expertise on cloud solutions and other technology areas

• CELARE – The cyber arm of BATM which focuses on digital security and threat detection

“The second half promises further strong development; we look for the emergence of positive operational leverage, returning BATM to profitability and good free cash generation over our forecast horizon. BATM, in our view, continues to transition its technology platforms to next-generation infrastructures across group activities; underlying operational strength is yet to show in financial results, but we note underlying momentum,” the broker added.

Shore said the group is exposed to a number of “growth themes” across medical equipment, testing & diagnostics and virtual network management (5G infrastructures), network software and cyber skills & technologies within networks.

<![CDATA[News - BATM subsidiary upgrades Kenyan education network ]]> https://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/212674/batm-subsidiary-upgrades-kenyan-education-network-212674.html BATM Advanced Communications Ltd’s (LON:BVC) subsidiary has completed an upgrade of the Kenya Education Network (KENET) from a 10-gigabit ethernet (GE) to a 100 GE.

The networking and telecoms firm said its subsidiary, high-end software development and design company Telco Systems, had delivered its T-Metro 8100 service platform and cloud gateway, which the group said offered “significant” service scalability as well as modular options for future expansion.

The KENET is the national education network of Kenya and provides high-speed internet, cloud-sharing, and e-learning services to university campuses across the country.

The company, which installed the original 10GE network in 2016, said the upgrade would allow KENET to upgrade the quality of its existing services as well as offering additional ones while also meeting the growing bandwidth requirements of its users.

Ariel Efrati, chief executive of Telco, said that the firm was “experiencing strong traction in the education vertical” and that its T-Metro 81000 was “well-positioned” to help network operators in the education market.

Dr Zvi Marom, chief executive of BATM, added that the firm would continue to strengthen its carrier ethernet portfolio as it was “the foundation on which our Networking business is built”.

“A further welcome demonstration of Telco Systems capabilities then with a reference long running client and with traction evident in the wider market,” said analysts at ‘house’ broker Shore Capital in a note to clients.

In early afternoon trading, BATM shares were steady at 47p.

Telco describes its NFVTime technology as “a holistic solution for network function virtualisation (NFV) uCPE [universal customer premises equipment] and edge compute”.

READ: What is edge computing and how it’s changing the network

Edge computing is computing that’s done close to the source of the data, instead of somewhere (potentially thousands of miles away) in a data centre. The NFVTime operating system provides the NFVi virtualisation software that can turn any Arm-powered or Intel x86-based “white box” device into a high-performance uCPE, running any virtual network function (VNF).

The NFVTime solution is optimised to run in the Arm environment using unique acceleration and security capabilities.

"The next generation infrastructure must be prepared to support a world of a trillion Intelligent devices," said Mohamed Awad, Arm’s vice president of Marketing, Infrastructure Line of Business.

"Ecosystem partners such as Telco Systems are meeting the challenge by leveraging the Arm Neoverse platform to create a diverse set of innovative solutions that scale from cloud to edge," he added.

Telco Systems and Arm are working together to expand the technology partner ecosystem, customer pipeline and other go-to-market activities for the newly developed offerings. Telco Systems and Arm are focusing on developing NFV virtualisation and operational software to support NFV use cases, such as software-defined wide area network, security and others. The two companies are also creating an ecosystem for system-on-a-chip vendors, such as Marvell, Cavium and NXP, white box vendors, VNF providers and leading service providers.

The company, which returned to profit last year, notched up underlying earnings (EBITDA) of US$500,000 versus a loss the year before of US$300,000.

The adjusted operating loss more than halved to US$0.6mln from US$1.4mln on revenue that rose 16.9% to US$58.2mln from US$49.8mln.

At the end of June, the group had cash and financial assets of US$23.3mln, down US$24mln.

The bio-medical division, which accounts for just over half of group revenue, saw revenue rise by 3% to US$29.6mln from US$28.6mln, while the networking and cyber division saw revenue surge 36.5% to US$28.6mln from US$21.0mln.

The sharp increase in the revenues of the networking and cyber division was primarily due to the delivery of products relating to a contract won last year with an agency of a government defence department.

"In the first half of 2018 we've seen sustained momentum in all our areas of activity, which is increasingly reflected in our numbers with growth in sales and positive EBITDA, but the real story is found in the underlying operational achievements of the period,” said Dr Zvi Marom, the chief executive officer of BATM.

"In the Networking and Cyber division, we significantly progressed the development of our NFV [network function virtualisation] ecosystem, which is designed to support an entirely virtualised network infrastructure - which is key for the implementation of 5G technologies and to run applications such as autonomous vehicles. Most importantly, we signed a strategic investment and joint development agreement with Arm that will greatly advance our NFV strategy and is also testimony to the strength of our offer. In our Cyber unit, we were awarded contracts worth US$7mln by government defence departments for our unique solution that can monitor very large networks, up to the level of a state,” he added.

"In the Bio-Medical division, we saw the benefits of our investment last year with the roll-out of several new advanced diagnostic tests and systems and biological waste treatment systems, which are being very well-received by the market. We made significant strides in the development of our unique molecular biology systems - which we believe offers significant upside. It was also pleasing to see the return of activity in China following a hiatus last year,” Dr Marom said.

The group entered the second half of 2018 with a strong backlog of orders due to be delivered by year-end. In addition, the board expects the momentum of activity across its divisions to increase throughout the year as a result of which it is confident of achieving sustained growth.

Shore Capital hikes FY estimate

House broker Shore Capital responded to the interims by tweaking its full-year revenue forecast.

“With a stronger revenue performance than our trend expectation for H1, we are increasing our FY estimate by US$2mln to US$114mln, but retaining EBITDA, PBT and EPS estimates for the moment, reflecting the continuing operational investment focus of management,” Shore said.

BATM’s intellectual property (IP) covers all of the above fields and increasingly, the company is finding ways to make money out of its IP.

Shares in BATM were down 0.1p at 41p in mid-morning trade.
