BT Group plc (LON:BT.A) is in reportedly in advanced talks to appoint Worldpay Inc’s (LON:WPY) outgoing joint chief executive Philip Jansen as its new boss, according to Sky News.

The website report said Jansen is believed to be the preferred candidate to replace outgoing boss Gavin Patterson, who revealed in June he would stepping-down towards the end of this year having seen the group tumble from one issue to another over the previous 18 months or so, during which time its share price almost halved.

An accounting scandal at BT's Italian division last January rocked the market, while in May BT revealed a drop in revenues and plans to plough billions into its pension pot and cut thousands of jobs to prop up its bottom line.

Sources said that Jansen had not yet formally agreed to accept the role but suggested that he was expected to do so, with one telling Sky that “it is his job to turn down”.

In early September, the Daily Telegraph reported that BT had reportedly held discussions with Ronan Dunne, the former boss of O2, to replace Patterson as chief executive.

In August, Sky reported that the boss of Informa PLC (LON:INF) had also been approached for the role was one of several other candidates being considered.

Other possible candidates that have been understood to be in line for the top job at BT include Dominique Leroy, the boss of the Belgian telecoms operator Proximus, and Lord Carter, the former head of Ofcom.
