These "designer" alloys include those containing copper, nickel, cobalt and the rare earth elements.

Great Western Minerals Group Ltd. (GWMG) is a Saskatchewan-based junior exploration company. Listed on the TSX Venture Exchange (TSX.V: GWG), GWMG is engaged in the acquisition, exploration, and development of rare earth mineral properties in North America and Africa.
Current properties include two rare earth projects in Saskatchewan, Canada, one in New Brunswick, Canada, one in Utah, USA, and one in South Africa . The most advanced projects is the 100%-owned Hoidas Lake Rare Earth Project, located in northern Saskatchewan, and the Steenkampskraal Project in South Africa.
Rare earth elements (REEs) are used in many alternative energy technologies such as wind power generation, fuel cells, rechargeable batteries, hydrogen storage, and permanent magnets used in electric and electric-hybrid vehicles. The rare earth elements comprise the lanthanide series of elements and include lanthanum, cerium, neodymium, praseodymium, samarium, europium, gadolinium and yttrium.

Great Western Minerals currently has three projects in development, one of which (Hoidas Lake) has been advanced to the prefeasibility stage of development.
GWMG's goal is to put in place a "mine-to-market" strategy and become North America's first vertically integrated rare earth elements producer. To that end, GWMG acquired its wholly owned subsidiary and processing facility, Great Western Technologies Inc. (GWTI), in January of 2006, and Less Common Metals Ltd., in June of 2008.
Steenkampskraal Mine (Rareco), Project — Western Cape, South Africa

The former-producing Steenkampskraal Mine is located approximately 70 km north of the town of Vanrhynsdorp, population 4,000, in the Western Cape Province of South Africa and is approximately 350 km north and west of Cape Town.

The Hoidas Lake Rare Earth Project is North America's most advanced rare earth element (REE) property in development. This site has the potential to supply at least 10% of North America's consumption of REEs for many years.

Deep Sands Utah Rare Earth Element Project, USA

A heavy mineral sands property in Utah, United States. This 17,094 hectare property is located near Salt Lake City in Juab County which, at one time, was considered to be one of the richest mining districts in the United States. The property is accessible year-round, with rail, roads, and power located adjacent to the property.

The Benjamin River rare earth element project is located approximately 53 km west of Bathurst, New Brunswick. The property consists of 493 claim blocks covering 114 sq km and hosts a heavy rare earth element enriched, apatite-diopside-magnetite vein.
