Tesco PLC -
First rise in share since end-2016

Tesco PLC (LON:TSCO) has seen its share of the UK grocery market rise for the first time in more than four years as online shopping continues its relentless march forwards.

The FTSE 100 supermarket giant saw its share rise by 0.2% to 27.4% in February 2021, the first rise since December 2016 as it saw monthly sales jump 13.2%, according to market researcher Kantar.

The grocer’s success was felt across the business with online sales, larger supermarkets and smaller convenience outlets all contributing to its strong performance, Kantar added.

Tesco’s strong performance was reflected across all of its peer group with sales rising by 15.1% in the four weeks to 21 February, the best growth rate since June 2020.

Morrisons also won market share, taking an extra 0.1 percentage points to reach 10.3% of the market, with sales up by 13.9%.

Sainsbury’s increased sales by 12.1% to hold its market share of 15.6% while Asda sales were 10.3% higher compared with a year ago.

The big four are also doing relatively better than their discount rivals Lidl and Aldi, both of which notched up healthy sales increases but saw their share of the market drop.

Aldi now has 7.5% compared to 7.9% a year ago, while Lidl’s presence is 5.7% against 5.8%.

Pandemic sees £15.2bn grocery splurge

Kantar also highlighted some patterns of shopping during the pandemic year with an extra £15.2bn spent on groceries and the average household forking out £4,800 or a rise of £500.

Seven billion more meals were eaten at home and an additional two billion cups of tea since spring 2020, Kantar added.
