Amphion reports positive pre-clinical trial results for WellGen’s black tea concentrate

6th Oct 2009, 5:32 am Amphion reports positive pre-clinical trial results for WellGen’s black tea concentrate

Medical and technology businesses developer Amphion Innovations (AIM: AMP) said today pre-clinical trials showed that its partner company WellGen’s propriety black tea concentrate significantly improved glucose control after the WellGen theaflavin-rich black tea concentrate favourably affected critical biomarkers of diabetes, allowing it to move forward to human clinical studies of medical food for diabetes.

The study examined whether the black tea concentrate affected measures indicative of the control of diabetes and compared the effect of a diet including a WellGen black tea concentrate versus a single daily dose of metformin, the first-line pharmaceutical intervention in the treatment of diabetes.

The results showed that the WellGen black tea concentrate lowered fasting glucose and significantly reduced postprandial glucose concentrations as well as demonstrated that a diet containing WellGen’s proprietary neutraceutical significantly improved HbA1c, which reflects the average concentration of glucose in a subject’s blood over a prolonged time.

WellGen is now planning human clinical studies to support a medical food for diabetes using WellGen black tea concentrate.

Amphion, which has shareholding in seven other partner companies, currently holds a 14.6% stake in WellGen, valued at US$6.6 million as of 30 June 2009.
