Accsys says Accoya wood sales rising, wins order for 2nd wooden road bridge in Sneek, Netherlands
Accsys Technologies PLC (AIM: AXS) reported a 51 percent year-on-year rise in sales revenue from its proprietary Accoya wood in the three months to end-June 2009 and said it has won the order to supply Accoya for the second heavy traffic road bridge in Sneek, the Netherlands.
The group’s primary focus is on the production of Accoya acetylated wood and technology licensing via its wholly owned subsidiary, Titan Wood Ltd.
Accoya is produced in Titan’s state-of-the-art production facility in Arnhem, the Netherlands, by using a patented, non-toxic process that effectively converts sustainably grown softwoods and non-durable hardwoods into a product that is very durable and is particularly suited to exterior applications.
In an interim management statement today, Accsys said it has carried out a detailed review of its cost base to ensure it is appropriate for the current business environment, resulting in a significant headcount reduction.
The Accoya production facility is currently undergoing a major automation project, which will improve efficiency and reduce operating costs and headcount further. Process improvements at the facility earlier this year already increased its capacity by 33 percent to 40,000 cubic metres per annum in anticipation of increasing demand from potential markets on behalf of licensees.
Chief executive Paul Clegg, who replaced Finlay Morrison in July, commented: “Whilst the trading environment continues to be challenging, the changes we are making will ensure we have a more efficient and focused business moving forward.”
Following the successful completion of the first heavy traffic road bridge made of Accoya in Sneek, in the Dutch province of Friesland, it has recently been awarded the contract to supply Accoya for the construction of a second bridge, Accsys added.
Like the first bridge, the second will cross the A7 motorway passing the town. It will be smaller as it will not carry a bicycle lane. The first bridge opened to traffic in November 2008, and the second is scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2010.
