Afren (LON:AFR) has told investors that field operations are now resuming at the Barda Rash project in the Kurdistan region of Iraq.

The company said there has been an improvement in the security situation in the border areas of Kurdistan.

It comes days after the UK stepped up its involvement in the fight against the Islamic State militant group in Iraq, joining US-led airstrikes.

Afren said the process of increasing staffing levels for Bard Rash is now underway, and elsewhere field operations at the Hunt Oil operated Ain Sifni project have already resumed to normal levels.

The London-listed oil company expects drilling and production operations to be fully resumed by the end of October.

In a stock market statement the company said: “Afren's primary consideration is the safety and wellbeing of employees.

“The decision to resume full operations at Barda Rash has been made following a close monitoring of the situation and in close consultation with the relevant authorities.”
