Minds + Machines (LON:MMX) said its client, Celebrate Broadway, has secured the sole application status for the top level generic Internet domain, .broadway.
A generic top level domain (or gTLD) is the bit in the web address that comes after the final dot in a web address. The .broadway will obviously be of keen interest to theatre owners and theatre goers.
Minds + Machines will act as the registry service provider for the new generic top level domain and will be advising Celebrate Broadway on the next steps ahead of the domain's launch: pre-delegation testing, contracting and then delegation into the Internet's root zone.
Essentially, registry companies (i.e. Minds + Machines, in this case) provide services to registrars (e.g. Celebrate Broadway).
The registry company keeps a database containing domain name service information, such as Internet Protocol (IP) addresses (a kind of post-code for web addresses) plus a certain amount of information that keeps track of which registrar registered which domain. It sets the rules for the domain name and works with registrars to promote the acquisition of domain names by the public.
Minds + Machines operates as both a registry and a registrar.
Shares in Minds + Machines, up 86% over the last year, were down 2% at 11.15p in early deals.
