It is list-making time of the year and City firm Panmure Gordon has put off making one for Father Christmas and done one of its top picks for 2014 instead.

The release of the list also gives the broker the chance to blow its own trumpet, as it crows about how its small & mid-cap selections have performed since the broker started its Top Picks list in 2010.

“Since 2010 our Small & Mid Cap Top Picks have massively outperformed the Datastream UK Small Cap market index. During this period our Top Picks rose by 156% versus a UK small cap index increase of only 6%, thereby outperforming the market by a mind-blowing 142%,” the broker note said.

Bearing in mind the old adage about past performance being no guide to future performance, here are Panmure Gordon’s top picks for 2014: Conviviality Retail (LON:CVR), Dechra Pharmaceuticals (LON:DPH), First Derivatives (LON:FDP), Fusionex International (LON:FXI), Gable Holdings (LON:GAH), Goldenport (LON:GPRT), GVC Holdings (LON:GVC), Hilton Food Group (LON:HFG), Johnston Press (LON:JPR), Kromek Group (LON:KMK), Liontrust Asset Management (LON:LIO), Speedy Hire (LON:SDY) and Xchanging (LON:XCH).

Of the 12, Conviviality Retail and Kromek were both new listings in 2013.

Bargain Booze owner Conviviality Retail is primed for growth, according to Panmure Gordon, with “payback for franchisor and franchisee achievable in just over one year,” the broker estimates.

Kromek, which designs, develops and produces x-ray imaging and radiation detection products using its core cadmium zinc telluride technology, could be set for a bonanza year in 2014 as a new European Union directive comes in at the end of January requiring all European airports to screen liquids, aerosols and gels presented at airport security with EC approved equipment.
