Weststar Resources confirms Saskatchewan Coal in Drill Core
Development efforts continue at the Tobin Lake Coal Prospect, Saskatchewan, 100% owned by Canadian Venture and Frankfurt listed Weststar Resources (TSX.V: WER, Frankfurt: HN3). The company provided an update on the first phase of drilling which reconfirmed the historic coal intersection from the 1994 drilling.
Based on the comments by Company president, Mitchell Adam the drilling conditions and type of rig used do not appear to be ideal and the results may well not reflect the true potential of the Tobin Lake Coal Prospect. Drilling equipment complications have impeded the recovery of the coal zones, and the completion of appropriate geophysical logging. The thicknesses below are therefore based on partially completed holes. Needless to say, results from partly completed holes do hardly any justice to the project!
However, the reconfirmation of the historic coal intersection is an important development for Weststar. The similarity in depth of the two core holes bodes very well for the future drilling and extrapolation of a continuous coal seam within the Tobin Lake property. Adams confirmed the company’s plans to return with the second phase of drilling to further delineate the extent of the seams and potentially determine an indicated resource on the property.
To date, three locations each about 1 km apart, have been drill tested by 3 rotary holes and 2 core holes. The three locations, identified as Site A, Site B and Site C, contain appreciable quantities of coal, over a wide area. At Site A, the original coal discovery, a coal zone over 13.8 m was intersected in drill core. At Site B located 1 km to the south, a coal zone about 5.35 m was interpreted from geophysical logs, and core. At Site C located 0.7 km to the west of B, a coal zone about 7.90 m was interpreted from geophysical logs.
At Site A, historic drilling by Consolidated Pine Channel Gold Corp., intersected a coal zone, 18.84 m thick, 47.70 metres to 55.32 metres (7.62 metres): coal, massive and 55.32 metres to 66.54 metres (11.22 metres): coal breccia, from 20 to 60 per cent angular coal clasts, mixed with varying amounts of clay, silt and sand. At this stage, neither the rank nor the grade of the coal was determined.
At Site B, drill holes drilled on the same pad encountered similar drilling conditions, resulting in poor core recovery (49.7% recovery) obtained in the cored interval. At Site C, down-hole geophysics suggests a coal zone 7.90 meter thick, between 31.75 and 39.65 meters, with up to 3 seams. This has yet to be verified by core drilling.
The Company is confident that a well prepared drill contractor, with appropriate equipment, can obtain good core recoveries during the Phase II drill program. The 2009 exploration successfully demonstrated the presence of appreciable quantities of coal over a wide area near Tobin Lake. A regional exploration technique of airborne electromagnetic is planned for the entirety of the property in order to target further drill locations during the phase II drill programme, which is scheduled for summer months.
According to Adams the similarity in depth of the two core holes bodes very well for the future drilling and extrapolation of a continuous coal seam within the Tobin Lake property. Drill results, even from partially completed holes, justify launching the second phase of drilling to further delineate the extent of the seams and potentially determine an indicated resource on the property.
