South America–focused gold miner Orosur Mining (LON:OMI, CVE:OMI) has appointed a veteran of mining in the region to be its new exploration manager.

Walter Muelebach is joining as General Manager of Exploration having worked for Xstrata Copper/Noranda as a program manager over the past 14 years.

A Chilean national, he has also previously worked for Teck Chile and Anglo American Chile in the Maricunga Belt, where Orosur has its Pantanillo project.

David Fowler, Orosur Mining’s chief executive, said: “Walter has 30 years experience working for major and junior companies exploring and developing gold and copper projects in Chile and South America and is an excellent addition to our team.”

The company operates the only producing gold mine in Uruguay (San Gregorio) and has a target of producing 63,000 to 68,000 ounces of gold in fiscal 2013 and 70,000 to 75,000 ounces in fiscal 2014.

Last month, Orosur appointed Juan Lacerda as General Manager for San Gregorio and Alfredo Elizondo as the new Mining Manager.

Orosur has gold projects in development at Mahoma in Uruguay and Pantanillo, Talca and Anillo in Chile.
