Oxford Pharmascience launches OxpZero taste masking product

22nd Nov 2011, 9:02 am by Philip Whiterow The technology behind OxpZero allows non-tablet forms of acidic and anionic drugs to be administered orally without bad taste or irritation.

Oxford Pharmascience (LON:OXP) has launched a new taste masking product it claims will enable people to take larger doses of painkillers such as ibuprofen and other drugs without a burning sensation in their throat.

Oxford said the burning sensation of ibuprofen has prevented the successful formulation of doses over 100mg per 5ml in adult suspension form, but its new product, OxpZero, can deliver 400mg/5ml or higher with none of these side effects.

The technology behind OxpZero has been licensed from Oxford University and allows non-tablet forms of acidic and anionic drugs to be administered orally without bad taste or irritation.

Oxford Pharma said it has already demonstrated OxpZero to taste mask ibuprofen liquid and chewable products and it is now making it available for a range of NSAIDs (non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs) including ibuprofen, diclofenac, mefenamic acid and naproxen, all of which have taste or burning issues to overcome especially at higher doses.

Marcelo Bravo, chief technology officer said: “ We are initially focusing our efforts on NSAIDs, but our technology can be applied to a range of products across a broad spectrum of therapeutic areas; including statins, antibiotics, gaba-analogues, ACE inhibitors and many other important acidic drugs."

The company recently raised £1.1 million to help it develop its business in Brazil as well as initiate commercialisation of its pipeline of NSAID and statin-based technologies.
