The FTSE 100 tacked on 30 points (0.5 percent), reaching 5,803 by 14:00. The FTSE 250 rose 48 points (0.4 percent) to 11,827 and the FTSE AIM 100 index rose marginally to 3,983.

Asset management firm Schroders (LON:SDR) led the blue chips, tacking on nearly 4 percent. ITV (LON:ITV) followed with a 3.5 percent gain. Mining major Kazakhmys (LON:KAZ), International Airlines Group (LON:IAG), engineering company IMI (LON:IMI) and credit information group Experian (LON:EXPN) rose 2.5 percent.

Commodities trader Glencore (LON:GLEN) was at the bottom of the pile with a 3.5 percent loss. Imperial Tobacco Group (LON:IMT) and Eurasian Natural Resources (LON:ENRC) lost about 2 percent. Tour operator Carnival Corp (LON:CCL) declined 1.5 percent.

Oil & gas

BP (LON:BP) posted a small gain. Cairn Energy (LON:CNE) and Tullow Oil (LON:TLW) rose 1 percent. Services company Wood Group (LON:WG) climbed 1.3 percent.

Midcap Premier Oil (LON:PMO) advanced 1 percent.

Mining

Precious metals


Most mining stocks slipped into the red today. Lonmin (LON:LMI) dropped 1 percent, while fellow FTSE 100 constituents Randgold Resources (LON:RRS) and Fresnillo (LON:FRES) declined marginally.

In the FTSE 250, Aquarius Platinum (LON:AQP) slipped 2 percent.

Base metals focused miners did better. Kazakhmys (LON:KAZ) was in the lead with a 2.5 percent gain. Antofagasta (LON:ANTO) followed, climbing 2 percent. Anglo American (LON:AAL), BHP Billiton (LON:BLT), Rio Tinto (LON:RIO) and Vedanta Resources (LON:VED) added 1 percent.

Midcap Kenmare Resources (LON:KMR), whose main asset is the Moma titanium minerals mine in Mozambique, did well today, tacking on 2.5 percent.

Red Rock Resources (LON:RRR) was among the best performing small caps, climbing 4.5 percent.

Banks, insurance, private equity

Financial stocks were in demand today. Royal Bank of Scotland (LON:RBS) led the banks, advancing 2.5 percent. Barclays (LON:BARC) and Lloyds (LON:LLOY) added 2 percent. Standard Chartered (LON:STAN) tacked on 1 percent.

Legal & General (LON:LGEN) and Aviva (LON:AV) were atop the insurance sector with gains of almost 1.5 percent. Prudential (LON:PRU) and Standard Life (LON:SL) tacked on 1 percent.

Small cap movers

Other notable risers among the small caps included Gemfields (LON:GEM) and Camco International (LON:CAO), which gained 7 percent and 5.5 percent respectively.
