Talvivaara Mining on track for nickel production this year
FTSE 250 constituent Talvivaara Mining confirmed this morning that the development of the Talvivaara polymetallic mine in Finland was still on track.
Key milestones passed included connection to the Finnish national grid in, environmental permits were upheld, materials handling operations and operational mining have commenced, and initial results from bioheapleaching had been “very promising”.
Talvivaara Mining posted a loss for the interim results, as expected, while it develops the mine in anticipation of moving into production.

“The hard work of our team combined with good planning and the cooperation of our partners enabled us to stay on timetable and meet our milestones. We have now nearly reached the end of our project development phase and nickel production is in sight. For this I am indebted to all the team here, but also to our trusted long term industrial partners and contractors for getting us to this point. I believe we are just at the beginning of the next stage in Talvivaara's development.”
The Talvivaara Project contains one of the largest known sulphide nickel resources in Europe with 336 million tonnes of ore in measured and indicated resources, which will support an initial production rate of 33,000 tonnes of nickel per annum for 40 years. The mine will also produce 60,000 tonnes per annum of zinc, 10,000 tonnes per annum of copper and 1,200 tonnes per annum of cobalt.
