Great Western in advanced talks for rare earth separation plant in South Africa

24th Feb 2011, 7:37 pm

Great Western Minerals (CVE:GWG) said Thursday that it is in the midst of advanced discussions with several companies for ways to construct a rare earths separation plant in South Africa.

The plant would process mixed rare earth chloride, produced from the company's Steenkampskraal mine, into separated rare earth oxides, which are key materials used in the battery, magnet and aerospace industries.

The company said it is considering several alternatives, including an off-take agreement for a portion of future production from the plant, potential equity investments by a third party, and the use of debt instruments for financing the construction.

"With GWMG having its own planned mining and separation production, our Company can create the maximum degree of supply certainty to our valued customers in Asia, Europe and the United States," said president and CEO Jim Engdahl.

Great Western owns a 70.2% stake in Rare Earth Extraction Co., the owner of the Steenkampskraal mine. It also signed an off-take agreement for 100% of the rare earth elements produced at the South African mine.

In addition, the company owns interests in seven rare earth exploration and development properties in North America.
