Roku shares jump after announcing ESPN+ streaming access

The sports video streaming service offers access to live and past sporting events

Shares of the streaming platform Roku Inc (NASDAQ:ROKU) jumped after the announcement that it will now offer ESPN+ access to its users.

The California-based company saw its share rise 5% in after-hours trading Monday and added as much as 8.4% in pre-market trading Tuesday.

ESPN+ is The Walt Disney Company’s (NYSE:DIS) direct-to-consumer sports video streaming service, offering thousands of MLB, NHL and other major sports league games, as well as international and college sports.

“Roku customers have enjoyed the ESPN channel for years. The launch of ESPN+ marks an exciting moment for the OTT sports experience, giving consumers more sports content from their favorite pastimes than ever,” said Scott Rosenberg, general manager of the platform business.

Like streaming competitors Netflix and Hulu, ESPN+ will offer exclusive, original content, including documentaries.

The service is available on Roku devices for US$4.99 a month of US$49.99 per year.
