Seeing Machines Limited (LON:SEE), the technology firm whose eye-tracking software is used in semi-autonomous vehicles, expects demand for its Driver Safety System (DSS) to pick up as the mining sector continues to recover.

DSS boxes, found in giant trucks that transport ore around large open-cast sites, are used to measure the alertness of the driver.

Seeing Machines has a deal with Caterpillar, the US digger maker – and the feedback from the manufacturer has been positive, chairman, Ken Kroeger told the company’s annual meeting in Canberra, Australia, overnight.

Caterpillar is forecasting strong sales

“In mining, with the resource sector starting to come back, Caterpillar is forecasting strong sales of Seeing Machines DSS technology,” the audience heard.

“We continue to supply paid engineering services to Caterpillar and ensure that our joint technologies remain aligned.

“Early-stage efforts are underway to help Caterpillar expand the application of the technology to other fields of use in which it has global footprints.”

Kroeger’s address rounded up what has been a successful year for all five divisions of the transport-focused technology group, whose activities cover not just mining, but rail, aviation, trucking and cars.

FOVIO a feature of new Super Cruise car

He reminded the audience that Seeing Machines’ FOVIO driver monitoring technology is a key feature in the new General Motors Super Cruise car, which has a hands-free driving system.

He pointed out the consumer safety group Euro NCAP believes driver monitoring will become a mandated technology for road vehicles in order to achieve a five-star safety rating.

Outside the automotive sector, Seeing Machines has inked a major commercial agreement with Progress Rail - one of the largest global operators. The plans is to have Seeing Machines modify its mining technology and bring it to the global railroad market.

And Kroeger expects the aviation business to take off. “Already, we have formed strong relationships with some of the sectors most recognised brands,” he told investors.

“Over the coming years, we expect to see face and eye tracking related technologies become essential components in ground based pilot training, air traffic control and in-cockpit capability.”
