Richard Keys: "Wrong 'un" Payet will leave Hammers, sooner or later

If you are going to do some tapping, choose a hammer

Want-away West Ham playmaker Dmitri Payet will get his wish, and will leave the Hammers, according to Richard Keys.

It's just a matter of whether he leaves in the current transfer window, or he leaves in the summer.

Keys, like many, has wondered how it is that the obviously talented Payet had got to the age of 28 before coming to the notice of the football world – or at least the English part of it – or without attracting the attentions of a onw of Europe's super-clubs, and he reckons he knows the answer.

“He's a wrong 'un,” Keys told TipTV.

Payet reportedly wants to return to his native France, to play for the fabulously wealthy Marseilles FC, because he is 'homesick'.

“How can you be homesick for Marseilles when you live in London?” asks Keys.

“You can catch a plane – you can hire a plane – and be home in an hour,” Keys suggested.

West Ham can't win this, in Keys's views, and they are better off getting what they can for him and getting him out of the club, preferably as soon as possible.

Keys is perplexed at some of the things going on at West Ham, such as the derisory £6mln bid for striker Jermain Defoe, who is probably worth £100mln to Sunderland, as he is their best chance of staying up.

“Plainly, someone at West Ham has done what someone at Marseilles has done [to Payet],” Keys speculated, referring to the process of 'tapping up' a player to see whether he would be interested in a move.

Interestingly, Keys think Defoe will ultimately return to West Ham, the club he dumped Charlton Athletic for West Ham United at the age of 16.

Since leaving West Ham in 2004 for north London rivals Tottenham Hotspur, Defoe has not been a popular figure with the east London club's fans, but Keys thinks his heart is there and he will want to return.

Again, as with Payet, whether it happens this month or in the close season is the only question in Keys's mind.
