Windar's technology gathers wind data to help optimise the performance of wind turbines

Windar Photonics PLC (LON:WPHO) has continued its good run in India this week after it picked up another new order for one of its LiDAR wind sensors.

The company won a public tender from the Indian National Institute of Wind Energy (NIWE), and the multi-beam LiDAR system is for immediate delivery, Windar said.

The NIWE is a research institute under the Indian government’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and is a well-respected institution within the Indian wind energy industry.

It also serves as a certification body for wind turbine technology, making today’s order, although not very large, potentially significant for Windar.

“The expected verification by NIWE of our LiDAR systems is an important step forward, supporting our future business in India,” said Windar’s interim chief executive Jørgen Korsgaard Jensen.

Today’s order follows hot on the heels of yesterday’s announcement that the company had won another order from an Indian power generating firm for five of its wind sensor units, with an option for a further thirty-five.

Windar’s LiDAR technology analyses the wind ahead of a turbine so it can be optimised to fit the conditions.

Short-term variations in wind speed can be measured before they reach the blades and this can increase annual power generation by 1-4% and reduce any possible damage to the wind turbine.

Shares closed slightly lower at 75.7p on Wednesday.
