Press speculation over the weekend suggested a Chinese investor has shown interest in San Leon

Shares in SAN LEON ENERGY PLC (LON:SLE) soared on Monday morning after the oil and gas firm confirmed it had received an approach from a possible bidder which could lead to a takeover offer being made.

The board was keen to stress, however, that the approach didn’t necessarily mean that an offer would be forthcoming nor had there been a “firm intention” to make a bid.

Not much information was disclosed in the stock market announcement, but press speculation over the weekend suggested that a “Chinese investor” was the interested party.

The company offloaded two projects in Poland last week, just days after it agreed to pay out €23.3mln to settle a number of disputes relating to projects in the country.

Shares were up 26% to 54.5p.
