“I am impressed by the world class people and DMS technology in the company," McAuliffe said.

Seeing Machines Ltd (LOM:SEE) has made its next steps in its plan to spin out a new automobile focussed business, with the appointment of Silicon Valley based Mike McAuliffe to run the new venture.

McAuliffe will be chief executive of FOVIO, which is to be headquartered in the United States, but will base its research and development in Australia.

FOVIO is to focus on the significant market opportunity for Seeing Machines’ driver monitoring technology in the new generation of automobiles. Specifically, it is targeting the markets for advanced ADAS, semi-autonomous and self-driving automobiles.

Seeing Machines says the spin-out business – which is already working closely with global OEMs and ‘tier one’ suppliers – “heavily engaged” in research and development with multiple contracted car models.

It is expected that the new generation of the system, which has been used to monitor the tiredness and concentration of drivers, will be centred on proprietary FOVIO DMS processor chip and embedded software solutions.

McAuliffe – whose experience and expertise has been in the semiconductor, embedded software and electronics industries – will now lead the business which will initially comprise more than 60 people in R&D and the global organisation is expected to grow significantly as it develops customer support operations and invests in further R&D.

"I am thrilled to join Fovio to help lead the company on the exciting journey ahead,” McAuliffe said in a statement.

“I am impressed by the world class people and DMS technology in the company and the unique opportunity to build a great business around the next wave of intelligent autonomous automobiles.

“I really look forward to working with Ken and the whole FOVIO team to make this happen and making a huge contribution to auto safety."

Ken Kroeger, Seeing Machines chief executive, meanwhile, said: “I am delighted to be able to attract Mike on board as CEO for FOVIO.

“He has the proven skills and experience we were looking for to lead the spin-out and building of the business going forward. Mike joins a group of talented hard-working people and good friends that I am very proud to have worked with.

“I will now focus my full attention on exploring the many other exciting market opportunities for Seeing Machines' business."
