“Our system’s expansive data downlink capacity will potentially enable the space industry to grow exponentially,”

A subsidiary company of capital investment firm Allied Minds PLC (LON:ALM), BridgeSat Inc has partnered with Surrey Satellite Technology US LLC to develop a free-space optical communications system.

The system will provide secure data downlinks from low Earth orbiting satellites to a proprietary ground network at faster speeds than current solutions which use an equivalent radio frequency.

Under the partnership, the Surrey Satellite group will build flight laser terminal units to communicate with BridgeSat’s global ground network.

The pair aims to provide users with a “one-stop” solution to transmit data at up to 10 gigabits per second.

“Our system’s expansive data downlink capacity will potentially enable the space industry to grow exponentially,” said John Serafini, senior vice president of parent company Allied Minds.

The system is expected to be operational within the next couple of years.

Shares in Allied Minds were up 2% to 387.8p.
