Akers Bio has made the first and only disposable ketone breath test for diabetes and obesity

Diagnostic testing group Akers Biosciences (LON:AKR) has taken another step towards launching production in China.

The group said a new factory to be run by its Chinese joint venture Savy Akers was now fully operational.

The 10,000 square foot plant in Haikou National Hi-Tech Industrial Zone is up and running, with regulatory approval for the manufacturing of products expected shortly.

Akers set up the venture, in which it has a 19.9% stake, in October 2014 to help commercialise the firm’s rapid diagnostic screening and testing products in China.

Raymond Akers, executive chairman, said: “In only a year since formation of the joint venture, we have established a substantial, fully operational production facility in China.”

In September, Akers Bio launched the first and only disposable ketone breath test, which accurately and rapidly measures ketosis - a fat-burning state key to weight loss.

It does away with blood and urine tests and delivers results in less than three minutes.

Chairman Akers said: “China represents a huge potential market for several of the company's rapid diagnostic tests - and none more so than for our tests in the areas of diabetes and weight loss.

“The scale of the obesity and diabetes problems in China requires simple, fast and affordable solutions that enable consumers and medical practitioners to monitor aspects of health in a more efficient way.”

Studies by the World Health Organization show as much as 20% of the population in some Chinese cities struggles with obesity, while there are now around 20mln people in China suffering from type 1 diabetes.

The joint venture has started marketing several of Akers Bio's products through social media and online services, focusing on rapid breath tests in the areas of diabetes, weight loss and fitness.
