Miami is one of only three US cities to launched their own web domain

Minds + Machines (LON:MMX) has told investors that the launch of the new .Miami web domain has been highly successful.

Some 8,000 web sites were registered onto the .Miami domain in the first seven days following the launch, the AIM quoted web domain firm said. The success follows a co-ordinated marketing campaign with GoDaddy and HelloDotMiami, which is specialised for Spanish language registrations.

It marked .Miami as the fastest growing geographically based web domain in that period, MMX said, and it ranks as one of the most successful new city domain launches so far.

Antony Van Couvering, MMX chief executive, described it as a “rousing success” for both the company and the City of Miami.

"We could not be more pleased with the launch of .MIAMI, one of only three United States cities to have launched their own geo top-level domain,” he said.

“We view the launch of .MIAMI as establishing a new model for a successful geo TLD launch: a strong partnership with the City government; sustained engagement with civic and business leaders; and targeted marketing in co-operation with our registrar partners."

MMX, meanwhile, also revealed that its portfolio of geographically-based domains are seeing renewal rates significantly ahead of industry norms, with .london seeing an annual renewal rate of more than 90% versus ‘the norm’ of 50% to 75%.

The company also told investors that the early access programme for the .law domain starts today.

Via the early access programme, MMX initially charges a higher price for domain registrations though the price drops over successive days until they reach the standard price by the eighth day.

Van Couvering believes the launch of the .law domain will “change the way people look at top-level domains.”

“We expect to prove that restricting access to eligible applicants will increase not only demand and price, but also usage and promotion of second-level domains.

He added: “Early indications are that .law will have significant uptake from the global legal community."
