Epistem wins UK Trade & Investment award for expansion success
Epistem Holdings PLC (AIM: EHP), a UK biotechnology company with adult epithelial stem cell expertise in oncology, gastrointestinal and dermatological diseases, has won a national award for its overseas success, The Manchester Evening News reported on its website.
Epistem, which announced in October plans to open an office in the US, received the UK Trade & Investment's 'Internationalise Your Business' accolade at the Genesis 2009 biotechnology conference in London.
The UK government’s international business development organisation presents the award to the company the UKTI judges to have been the most successful at expanding into new markets following assistance from the organisation.
Epistem, led by chief executive Matthew Walls, beat candidate drug discovery services group BioFocus DPI, contract manufacturer Eden Biodesign, plant and marine extract specialist Neem Biotech and voice recognition group Winscribe Europe to the title.
The firm, which posted its maiden annual profits in October, has made progress working with pharmaceutical companies in Canada, Europe, Japan and Australia as well as the US, the report said.
Epistem's activities include testing drugs under development for treating cancer, Crohn's disease and other illnesses, analysing the effects of treatments by examining the cells at the base of a single human hair, and identifying genes that regulate cell growth.
In November, Epistem raised £2.9 million via a shares placing to bolster its balance sheet and provide money for acquisitions.
