Lansdowne Oil & Gas (LON:LOGP) has confirmed that drilling operations have now begun on the Midleton gas exploration well in the Celtic Sea.

The exploration project, off Ireland’s southern coast, is being paid for entirely by partner Kinsale Energy, an arm of Malaysia’s national oil company Petronas.

Drilling began in the Celtic Sea shortly after 6am this morning, Lansdowne revealed in a statement.

It is expected that the drill programme will last for between 20 and 30 days.

“We are delighted that Kinsale Energy has moved forward to drill the Midleton exploration well this year and we look forward to updating the market once the results are known,” said chief executive Steve Boldy.

Lansdowne has a 20% stake in the project, while Kinsale Energy owns the other 80%.
