ImmuPharma wraps up Phase IIb of Lupuzor trials, results 'encouraging'

company news image

Pharmaceutical company ImmuPharma (AIM: IMM) has announced the final results from a Phase IIb trial of its drug Lupuzor aimed at treating Lupus, which displayed clinically significant improvements in patient response rate compared to placebo plus standard of care.

The improvement was statistically significant in a subgroup of moderate to severe patients, which make for 90% of the ITT (intention to treat) population, with 62% of the patients in this sub-group were responders according to both a composite clinical score and a decrease of 4 points of the SLEDAI score when treated with Lupuzor, compared to 41% on placebo with fewer adverse effects leading to termination.

The study also showed that Lupuzor was generally well tolerated, showing lower adverse event rates than placebo.

The study was a randomised, double-blind placebo controlled, dose-ranging study in 150 patients designed to evaluate the efficacy of the drug in a three month treatment period. The study was terminated with an ITT population of 147 patients and the moderate to severe subgroup of 134 patients in line with the amended protocol.

Lupus is a disease that involves an inappropriate functioning of the immune system in that the immune-competent T and B cells are generating antibodies against certain self proteins. Lupuzor, which was discovered by France’s National Center for Scientific Research and further developed by ImmuPharma, modulates both T and B cells involved in Lupus to render the functioning of the immune system more appropriate while maintaining its overall efficacy.

“We are absolutely delighted that Lupuzor's phase IIb study has delivered such very encouraging clinical efficacy data reaching statistical significance in the moderate to severe subgroup (90% of the ITT population) and with an overall efficacy peaking at 70%. The information gathered in this study, in addition to the very small number patients needed to prove efficacy, paves the way for a medical and commercial success of Lupuzor,” said president and chief scientific officer of ImmuPharma, Robert Zimmer.

Lupuzor is scheduled to enter Phase 3 trials in the final quarter of 2010.

Broker Matrix Corporate Capital recently initiated coverage of ImmuPharma, giving it a “buy” rating and setting the target price at 309 pence per share, which is a substantial premium to the current price of 108 pence.

ImmuPharma is a London-based drug discovery and development group with subsidiaries in Mulhouse, France and Basle, Switzerland. Its aim is to develop novel drugs to treat serious medical conditions for which there is a high unmet need. It has five drugs in development to treat Lupus, cancer, severe pain, highly resistant infections like MRSA as well as inflammatory and allergic disorders.

In addition to its five lead drug candidates, ImmuPharma has a proprietary discovery process for generating more novel compounds for developing internally or licensing to others.
