Attention on Friday will be squarely on the US where non-farm payroll figures will give clues on the health of the economy.

Investec said: “Along with August, September’s figures have the tendency to be underreported and so we are looking for another sub-par number.”

The broker added that there could be an upward revision to last month’s first estimate of 173,000 to watch out for.

Mike van Dulken at Accendo Markets, reckons these figures are less important that recent months due to the increasing emphasis being put on China and the emerging markets.

Still, the split among analysts will likely cause some interest for investors who will be looking for signs of when the Federal Reserve might raise interest rates.

With a shallow pool of corporate news to choose from, Electrocomponents is to give an update on its first half of the year.

It follows the announcement on Thursday that finance chief Simon Boddie has stepped down.

Investors will be looking to see whether the firm has managed to arrest its margin issues, and will likely give an update on how the UK and US manufacturing industry is performing.
