Marenica Energy's (ASX: MEY) reverse circulation in-fill drilling has intersected more high grade mineralisation in the Eastern part of the Marenica Resource that will lead to improvements to the geological and resource model.

Well funded Marenica has $4.4 million in cash at bank from a placement to China's Hanlong in December. Hanlong has shown its hand, with a recent bid for another uranium developer, Bannerman Resources (ASX/TSX: BMN).

All down hole probe results have been received for the East Pit program at Marenica's 75%-owned Marenica Uranium Project located in Namibia, southern Africa.

A total of 205 holes were drilled for 11,201 metres and 86% of holes probed returned significant intercepts of more than 100 parts per million (ppm) uranium (eU3O8).

Highlights include:

- 8.4 metres at 346ppm eU3O8 from 24.7 metres.
- 8.7 metres at 352ppm eU3O8 from 28.0 metres; and
- 8.0 meters at 352ppm eU3O8 from 33.6 metres.

The company said results indicate a number of zones broadly conforming to a north-east trend within a continuous more than 50 parts per million (ppm) grade envelope.

Within this area, a number of northeast-trending high-grade zones were also identified, some of which remain open to the north and south.

Also, drilling at exploration target MA7 has been completed with a total of 88 holes drilled for 2,525 metres.

Importantly, the positive results from the East Pit Area, which is located within the current JORC resource, support the project's current Pre-Feasibility Study and potentially improve its economics.

Drilling was designed to in-fill the grid pattern to a 100m by 100m spacing in an area of the resource that was previously drilled on a wide-spaced grid (300m by 200m).

By securing $5 million of debt and equity financing from Hanlong, Marenica has longer-term feasibility and development funding, off-take arrangements and potential cooperation on future strategic acquisitions in the uranium sector up to December 2011.

The current measured, indicated and inferred resource for Marenica is 648 million tonnes at 97ppm for 138 million pounds of uranium.

A scoping study in October last year found that the Marenica Project could deliver 3.5 million pounds of uranium per annum at the highly competitive operating cost of US$38 a pound.

A Definitive Feasibility Study relating to the indicated resources at the Marenica project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

Marenica Energy (ASX:MEY) has taken sigificant steps toward underwriting the future development of its flagship Marenica Uranium project in Namibia by securing $5 million of debt and equity funding from China’s Hanlong Energy Limited.

In something of a coup for Marenica's CEO John Young, the agreement will encompass longer-term feasibility and development funding, off-take arrangements and potential cooperation on future strategic acquisitions in the uranium sector up to December 2011.

For Hanlong the deal provides the company with a seat at the uranium network table and become a participant in and join the global uranium network.

A definitive feasibility study relating to the indicated resources at the Marenica project is expected to be completed by the end of 2012.

The funding deed signed with Hanlong will provide immediate funding of $3 million through a $2 million convertible note and $1 million share placement at A$0.07 per share.

It will also fully underwrite a A$2 million rights issue at A$0.07 per share, to existing shareholders, increasing the total funds raised to $5 million.

Hanlong will also be given the opportunity to appoint one representative to the Board of Marenica.

John Young, CEO, said “the MOU sets out a timeframe for the negotiation of a future funding arrangements and off-take for uranium product from Marenica. The successful conclusion of an agreement on these fundamental components of the project will deliver Marenica shareholders the value benefits of a substantial funding package and a major project partner with a strong balance sheet, diversified operations and mining interests."

He said Marenica could be in the enviable position of being fully funded and be in production by 2014. This could coincide with "the beginning of the next major upswing in the uranium cycle, benefitting from higher uranium prices in the mine’s early production years.”

The funding paves the way for Marenica to progress to the next stage of evaluation and development of the Marenica Project, where it has recently completed a Scoping Study on a potential US$260 million heap leach development.

The study concluded that the project could deliver 3.5 million pounds of uranium per annum at a competitive operating cost of US$38/pound, based on the recently upgraded resource of 648 million tonnes at 97ppm, for 138M lbs U3O8.

Work is scheduled and underway for the remainder of 2010 and early 2011. Key activities leading to a final decision on the Pre-Feasibility Study will include:

- Metallurgical testwork for Heap Leach process route
- A Reverse Circulation (RC) exploration drilling program
- Completion of an HLEM survey at Target MA7
- Environmental and social impact baseline studies
- Development of a detailed OH & S Radiation Management Plan

Key activities as part of the Feasibility Study scheduled for 2011 will include:

- Technical Economic Model update and review
- Trial mining/pitting for further bulk Metallurgical testwork at larger scale for optimisation of process route
- A Reverse Circulation (RC) drilling program to optimise the conversion of Inferred Resources to reserves
- RC exploration drilling to further define and increase resources
- Updated Resource Calculation / Mining Optimisation Study
- Environmental and social impact studies for inclusion in the Definitive
Feasibility Study

Hanlong’s Managing Director, Steven Xiao, said “globally, the number of nuclear power plants is expected to double over the next 20 years, with China and India driving a large portion of the new developments. The uranium market fundamentals are strong, supporting favourable long-term uranium prices.'

“We believe that supplies from existing and near-term uranium mines will be insufficient to meet future demand. Hence, investing in promising uranium developers such as Marenica is a critical step towards evening out future demand and supply imbalances."

Hanlong is a subsidiary of the privately-owned China-based Sichuan Hanlong Group Co., Ltd, a large diversified group with a broad portfolio of investments in mining resource development, electricity production, infrastructure development and real estate.

The Group has over 12,000 employees worldwide and annual revenues of more than US$2.5 billion.

Marenica Energy new scoping study highlights Marenica as potential "world class" producer

Marenica Energy (ASX:MEY) has taken another significant step towards becoming a leading uranium producer, after a scoping study found that the Marenica Project in Namibia could deliver 3.5 million pounds of uranium per annum at the highly competitive operating cost of US $38 a pound.

The study focussed on the development of a heap leach operation that has an estimated capital cost of US $260 million and a 13‐year mine life. The capital cost is estimated to be US $260 million with a five year payback.

The study undertaken by SRK Consulting found the Marenica Project could produce a total of 45 million pounds of uranium over the 13‐year life based on the existing defined indicated and inferred mineral resource.

The company said this is a significant increase on the its earlier expectations as a result of the decision to develop a bulk open pit and heap‐leach operation with a lower cut‐off grade (COG) of 50ppm, rather than as a continuous agitated leach circuit fed by higher‐grade ore.

SRK Consulting ran Whittle optimisations on several models at different cut off grades and determined the optimum marginal COG at 50ppm for the heap leach scenario.

John Young, chief executive, said “this study shows that the Marenica project stands to become one of the more significant uranium producers in the world."

"This mine is expected to support an operation with a greater production profile than was originally believed possible in an agitated leach circuit. We believe the option presented in this study represents an achievable, realistic view given the size of the resource at Marenica,” he added.

Young said Marenica believed that infill drilling should expand the resource base to further boost the project’s economics.

The Mineral Resource Estimate was updated by SRK Consulting using a 50ppm LCOG deemed to be appropriate for bulk mining methods and has defined a total resource of 648 million tonnes at 97ppm U3O8 for 138M lbs.

The mining optimisation study defines a potentially minable 270M tonnes of low‐grade oxide ore, to be processed as run of mine heap‐leach material. The mineralisation is upgraded through a combination of screening and scrubbing, with approximately 50% of the run of mine ore discarded as waste prior to processing.

This upgrade process reduces the ore to be processed over the life of mine to 135M tonnes, and potentially increases process grades to 193ppm U3O8 using a conservative upgrade factor of 1.8 times, this is to be confirmed but is believed achievable based on work by ANSTO.

The SRK report notes that the model creates realistic, minable shells due to the block size of 50m x 50m x 5m (xyz), and that creating pit designs from these shells will not significantly increase the stripping ratio and hence not significantly reduce the cashflow.

The tonnages determined by Whittle were (flat line) scheduled over a 13 year (heap leaching) minimum mine life, with pre‐stripping of waste in the year before production starts.

The mine optimisation is based on current indicated and inferred mineral resource and the proposed upgrade of these inferred resources by further drilling should improve resource confidence and further enhance the already attractive project economics.

Mining cost estimates are based on using a combination of Caterpillar 785 trucks (136 t) loaded by a Komatsu PC4000 excavator in order to achieve the ore processing rate of 10.3 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) after scrubbing, and around 64 Mtpa total material movement.

Eight excavators and around 44 trucks are required, and mining services have been costed as contract only. The estimated capital cost is expected to be US $260M for the crushing, screening and process facility including a 10Mtpa On/Off leach pad, ancillary infrastructure and closure costs.

The metallurgical work currently underway at AMMTEC involves a series of upgrade, agglomeration and column leach tests. The aim is to produce an upgraded dry (screened) product that is combined with an upgraded (scrubbed) slurry that will be agglomerated as preparation for column leaching.

This work is being supervised by Kappes, Cassiday & Associates, who specialise in the development, engineering and implementation of extractive metallurgical processes for the mining industry and have particular expertise in heap leaching.

The results of this column leach test work will provide critical information on leaching kinetics, water and reagent use that will allow further optimisation of the costs used in the current economic model.

Operating and capital costs used to develop this scoping study were based on industry standard capital and operating cost data for similar sized mining, production processes.

Using a long term uranium price of US $65 a pound, the study indicates that the Marenica project can produce a positive NPV and IRR and pay back the initial project capital in 5 years.

Investors should note that this economic model is based on inferred and indicated resources. Marenica said the results of the study have provided it with the confidence to undertake additional drilling and metallurgical work in order to upgrade inferred resources, which should continue to improve the economic parameters of the project.

Upon a sufficient indicated resource being delineated a definitive feasibility study will commence. The project described in the scoping study will require mining and environmental permits and a site‐wide Environmental and Social Impact Statement (ESIS). Preliminary work required for the ESIS, such as baseline water sampling, meteorological and dust monitoring, will begin in November 2010.

The scoping study assumes receipt of all required permits to construct and operate the mine and plant within three years and the company believes that construction and commissioning of the plant would take place in 2013 and 2014.

Marenica Energy identifies optimal development process for Marenica Uranium Project

Marenica Energy (ASX: MEY) has identified the opportunity to develop the Marenica Uranium Project as a bulk-tonnage heap leach operation after receiving preliminary results from a Scoping Study, and plans to upgrade its exploration program.

The Study had intended to develop the project as a continuous agitated leach circuit fed by higher grade stock. However, the scoping work has indicated that a heap leach operation shows positive economics and is likely to deliver far superior financial returns.

Marenica has decided to undertake further work to more fully assess a heap leach operation. This will involve additional metallurgical test work across a broader run-ofmine samples to confirm the use of heap leach technology in a bulk ore scenario, given there is a large tonnage of low grade mineralisation available above the lower cut of 50ppm U3O8.

The metallurgical work will involve a series of agglomeration and column leach tests that will take several months and these tests are planned to commence in August.

The additional exploration and metallurgical testwork will be conducted to a level necessary to move to a Prefeasibility Study and all the components of the present Study will also be upgraded to this level.

The company said the proposed mining methods have only focused on truck and excavator mining and further mining studies with emphasis on bulk methods may improve economics.

The initial environmental investigations show there are no major environmental issues.

In conjunction with this metallurgical work, Marenica will upgrade and extend its exploration program to maximise the resource available for a larger bulk tonnage project.

Marenica has defined three exploration target areas with the potential to add substantial additional resources of contained U3O8.

Marenica said it is confident that the Marenica project exploration targets could deliver a further 100 to 150 million tonnes at a grade of 140ppm to 180ppm U3O8 in adjacent exploration areas.

John Young, chief executive, said the process would involve increasing the resource base, refining cost estimates, confirming infrastructure contracts for key items and optimizing the metallurgical process.

The economic potential of the project can be enhanced, lower capital and operating costs and by an increased annual production and minelife.

“The Study to date has shown that additional time spent on increasing the project resource base and providing further confidence in the optimal process route should add substantially to the economics and financial outcome of the Project,” Young added.

African-focussed Marenica Energy (ASX: MEY) has reported "further excellent results" from first pass drilling at two key targets outside of the main resource area at its Marenica Uranium Project in Namibia, Southern Africa.

Results received from both the MA7 and MA5 palaeo-channel systems, firm up these two target areas, which lie 7km south-east of the main resource, further reinforcing the regional exploration upside at the Marenica Project outside of the current JORC resource area.

Best results from the MA7 Target included:

- 6.4m @ 231.6ppm eU3O8 from 2.00m in MAC0347;
- 4.8m @ 124.0ppm eU3O8 from 2.77m in MAC0348;
- 6.5m @ 119.3ppm eU3O8 from 1.69m in MAC0395;and
- 5.7m @ 115.9ppm eU3O8 from 6.69m in MAC0404.

The company said uranium mineralisation was also encountered on all three traverses of Aircore drilling conducted over the central part of the Southern Palaeo-channel system.

Drilling targeted airborne radiometric anomalies occurring within a broad, 5km long zone of surface radon anomalism.

To date the intersections have been received from shallow drilling conducted on wide spacings of more than 1km and drilling, with better results including:

- 1.5m @ 206.2ppm eU3O8 from 24.39m in MAC0363;
- 4.8m @ 137.4ppm eU3O8 from 20.69m in MAC0370;
- 7.0m @ 176.7ppm eU3O8 from 18.91m in MAC0388; and
- 4.1m @ 136.8ppm eU3O8 from 21.18m in MAC0393.

John Young, chief executive officer, said a ground-based EM survey has been proposed to identify deeper channels within the palaeo-system, which will allow to drilling to be more focused over such a large area.

Wide- spaced drilling has indicated the potential for both surface mineralisation and deeper channel mineralisation. An extensive program of RC drilling to define potential resources in this area is planned for Q3 of 201."

The company also said that all remaining down-hole geophysical probe results have now been received for regional Aircore drilling completed during March-April 2010.

Further encouraging results have been received for Target Area MA5 confirming a broad, 2km wide zone of near-surface secondary mineralisation, located immediately west of the current resource area.

Better results returned from the MA5 Target included:

- 5.3m @ 336.7ppm eU3O8 from 1.68m;
- 4.2m @ 368.0ppm eU3O8 from 10.19m;
- 2.5m @ 247.0ppm eU3O8 from 1.18m.

Marenica said a program of RC drilling to define potential resources in this area is planned for Q3, 2010.

BGF Equities places Buy on Marenica Energy

Australian stock broker BGF Equities has released a report on Marenica Energy (ASX: MEY) and said that progress on metallurgy will lead to a significant upgrade of economics.

BGF Equities recommends Marenica Energy as a Buy.

BGF have upgraded their view on MEY following two key events; the acquisition of 10.6% of the company by Areva, and the 120% increase contained uranium resources, following the boost in grade from 140 ppm to 170 ppm.

MEY is one the cheapest entries into the Namibian uranium sector with an EV of A$0.93/lb. While they have less guidance on capex and opex for a possible development, as the scoping study is not due until mid 2010, BGF said it may find that the association with Areva gives MEY some unique benefits.

BGF said infrastructure sharing would lower capex. The ability to deliver pregnant liquor to Trekkopje for stripping could significantly lower capex and reduce financial risk.

A corporate outcome would also be an option for Areva if it decided it made sense to own Marenica outright, to maximise its presence in the region. Given what it paid for Trekkopje, MEY would be cheap at twice its price.

While the in-situ grade is modest, BGF said test work is showing that a simple mechanical upgrading of the ore can lead to grades in excess up to 500 ppm prior to leaching.

This significantly improves the economics relative to the hard rock alaskite projects in Namibia.

BGF said questions will be answered with the release of the scoping study, which could lead to a significant re-rating of the stock.

Marenica Energy drilling identifies western extension of Namibian uranium resource

International uranium company Marenica Energy (ASX: MEY) has reported that a fresh round of wide-spaced drilling at its 80%-owned Marenica Uranium Project in Namibia, Southern Africa, has identified a significant western extension of the resource.

The results reinforce the substantial exploration upside within the Marenica leases and the potential for further additions to the resource inventory, which was increased by 86% earlier this month.

A new program comprising 5,000 metres of Aircore drilling commenced at Marenica last month. The new drilling is designed to test regional targets defined by airborne radiometrics and geological modelling.

Drilling at target area MA5,located directly west of the existing Marenica resource area, has defined a broad area of near-surface, secondary uranium mineralisation associated with shallow calcrete cover and weathered bedrock, representing a potential western extension to the current resource.

Intersections as high as 259ppm eU3O8 over 1.4m were returned from limited downhole probing of wide-spaced drilling.

While only a limited number of holes at the target have been gamma-probed, the company said initial results are encouraging.

“These are exciting results from a relatively early stage of the new drilling program,” said Marenica Energy’s CEO, John Young.

“Wide-spaced aircore drilling has defined a zone of near-surface mineralisation immediately west of the resource zone which will be priority focus for resource drilling moving forward."

“Also of note is the potential for primary uranium mineralisation at Target Area MA6 in the Southern Dome area. The discovery of primary uranium deposits would be a company changing event for Marenica and remains a key objective for our exploration programs in parallel with work to progress the current resource towards production,” Young added.

To date, 244 holes have been drilled for approximately 2,400 metres at target areas MA4, MA5, MA9 and MA10. Down-hole gamma probing of the drilling is currently underway, although only limited results are available so far.

Reconnaissance of the southern target area MA6 has commenced, with initial observations indicating that the airborne radiometric anomaly defining the target is associated with anomalous leuco-granites, on the periphery of the Southern Domestructure.

Mapping and ground surveys at the target area will be completed during April, with a view to defining drill targets for potential granite-hosted uranium mineralization.

The company said this indicates the potential for primary uranium mineralisation hosted in the granites in this area, opening up an exciting new exploration front at the Marenica Project.

France’s Areva drills into Marenica Energy

Uranium explorer Marenica Energy Ltd (ASX: MEY) said its December quarter 2009 results included France-based nuclear and industrial giant Areva NC acquiring 10.6 per cent via acquisition from Polo Resources Plc (AIM: PRL).

The Marenica project licence in South-west Africa’s Namibia was also extended for two years by the country’s Ministry of Mines and Energy.

Areva NC holds a majority stake in Namibia’s Trekkopje uranium mine, located just 30 km away from Marenica’s major resource.

The French giant’s acquisition came on the back of circa A$74.24 million-capped Marenica upping its 80 per cent-owned uranium resource to 122 million tonnes at 140 ppm uranium, including an indicated resource of 16 million tonnes at 170 ppm uranium.

An inferred resource came in at 106 million tonnes at 140 ppm uranium.

Indicated resources are more accurate and reliable than inferred resources, often through increased drilling.

Combined, Marenica said the project’s total resource had been boosted by 9 per cent, and the uranium content by 12 per cent.

“Metallurgical test work on bulk samples from the Marenica project is continuing at ANSTO in Australia,” the company said.

“Initial results from screening, scrubbing and ore sorting tests carried out on two 500 kg samples have confirmed that the ore is amenable to upgrading.”

Marenica said that over the December quarter, 90 reverse circulation drill holes were completed over 2654 metres, bringing the year’s total to 617 holes over 14,889 metres.

Significant results ranged between 1257 ppm uranium at 7.9 metres, to 406 ppm uranium at 13.6 metres.

Sixteen new targets were also identified via airborne radiometrics.

“Anomalies have been categorised as primary granite hosted targets and secondary uranium palaeochannel hosted targets, similar to the Marenica deposit,” management said.

“More than 728 holes over 15,552 metres of drilling will be included in the next resource upgrade, due for completion in February 2010.”

Marenica’s Phillipus target indicated between 294 ppm uranium at 150 metres, to 101 ppm uranium at 100 metres.

The company added that its Springbok target had 12 holes drilled over 1368 metres, although results were “typically disappointing”.

In Australia, Marenica has also undertaken aerial surveillance and limited drilling at is Western Australia-based Northhampton uranium and Scadden lignite prospects.

Various blocks had to be relinquished at Northhampton under fourth-year compulsory reduction, with the five most prospective blocks retained.

At Scadden, Marenica said “the drilling identified a lignitic seam of potential economic interest ranging typically from five metres to 10 metres in thickness, and occurring at depths of between 15 metres and 50 metres.”

Lignite is the lowest-ranked coal, with properties lying between coal and peat. It can be converted into gas and petroleum products.

For the December quarter 2009, Marenica outlaid A$2.06 million - mostly on exploration - and exhibited a A$2.02 million decrease in cash to A$5.23 million.

Marenica Energy was formerly known as West Australian Metals (ASX: WME).

At the time of writing, Marenica shares were trading at 16.5 cents.

Westhouse says Polo Resources’ decision to sell 10.5% stake in Marenica Energy to Areva is good news for Marenica’s ambitions in Namibia

Westhouse Securities elaborated on Marenica Energy's (ASX: MEY) (“Marencia”) announcement to the market (on 21 December) that Polo Resources (AIM: PRL)(“Polo”) had sold its 47.56 million shares or 10.57% stake in Marenica to French nuclear group, Areva.

The 47.56m Marenica shares are the remainder of 49.56m shares that Polo purchased in June 2009 at A$0.12 as part of Marenica raising A$9.9m. Polo retained the 24.78m options in Marenica it received as part of the fundraising. These are exercisable at A$0.25 each by 30 June 2011. Westhouse said this is good news for Marenica as Areva is the only real partner for the Marenica uranium project in Namibia which is adjacent to Areva’s Trejkoppe project.

Polo previously held 10.3m Berkeley Resources shares (ASX: BKY; AIM: BKY) and 5.67m options at A$0.75 but sold these over the summer in order to participate in the raising by Extract Resources. However, in discussions the company has always remained positive about the outlook for Berkeley.

As part of the deal, Areva will exercise its 10.6m options in Berkeley Resources and sell these shares plus its existing 3.5m shares to Polo. The difference in value, equivalent to ~6.4m Berkeley shares, will be met by Polo paying Areva A$7.42m - the average trading price over the ninety days prior to the 30 November 2009.

Over the summer, in order to participate in a fundraising in its largest investment Extract Resources (ASX: EXT), Polo closed several positions. These included selling its entire holding in Berkeley Resources and significantly reducing its holdings in A-Cap Resources (ASX: ACB), Impact Minerals (ASX: IPT), Marenica Energy (ASX: MEY) and Uranex (ASX: UNX).

As a consequence of the deal Berkeley announced on 12 January 2010 that Areva’s rights for off-take or marketing of the uranium production from Berkeley's projects had been terminated.

On 2 December Berkeley released the results of its scoping study for the Salamanca uranium project in Spain and hopes to have the feasibility study completed by November 2010.

As well as selling its entire holding in Berkeley over the summer, Polo also significantly reduced its holdings in A-Cap Resources, Impact Minerals, Marenica Energy and Uranex.

Polo sold down its stakes in A-Cap Resources and Impact Resources to China Growth Minerals Limited (CGM), a Hong Kong based investment company. CGM purchased 13 million A-Cap Resources shares and 5.92m shares in Impact Resources from Polo. CGM also has an option to purchase the remaining shares in A-Cap and Impact Polo hold at the 15-day Volume-Weighted Average Price (VWAP). The option expires on 23 March 2010.

Marenica Energy reports on significant development at Marenica Uranium Project

International uranium company Marenica Energy (ASX: MEY) has released a company update, following significant corporate developments over the Christmas period and the receipt of encouraging new exploration data from its 80%-owned Marenica Uranium Project in Namibia, Southern Africa.

During the afternoon trade, shares in Marenica increased 6.9%, or 1c, to 15.5c.

In late December 2009, the French-based multinational industrial and nuclear energy giant, Areva agreed to acquire a 10.57% interest in Marenica from Polo Resources PLC, on terms and conditions set out together with the Substantial Interest Notice (Form 603) lodged on 23 December 2009.

Areva, which is the world leader in the nuclear fuel cycle, from uranium mining, conversion and enrichment through to spent fuel re-processing and re-cycling, has a majority interest in the Trekkopje Uranium Mine, which is located less than 30km from the Marenica Project.

The Trekkopje deposit is a shallow, high-tonnage, low-grade uranium deposit hosted by calcretised palaeo-channels. Full production at Trekkopje is anticipated to commence in 2011 with a forecast initial mine life of 12 years.

Areva’s Southern African subsidiary, AREVA Resources Namibia, has key infrastructure, including a desalination plant at Wlotzkasbaken, located approximately 30 km north of Swakopmund – a first for Southern Africa – that will supply sufficient water to support the mining operations at Trekkopje Mine, which lies approximately 40km inland into the desert.

Marenica has also advised that its resource consultants, SRK Consulting (SRK) Pty Ltd, are continuing to work on the Marenica Resource Estimate update due at the end of January. All probe data and QA/QC assay data have now been compiled, and the resource update is on track to be finalised and announced in late January/early February 2010.

The Company released a series of positive results from the Marenica Project prior to Christmas, including an interim Resource Estimate upgrade announced on 18 November of 122 million tonnes grading 140ppm U3O8, comprising an Indicated Resource of 16 million tonnes grading 170ppm U3O8 and an Inferred Resource of 106 million tonnes grading 140ppm U3O8.

Marenica is also pleased to report that 16 new priority exploration targets have been identified following the receipt of new airborne radiometric and magnetic data for the Marenica Project.

Preliminary interpretation of the data has been completed within an area of 340 square kilometres. Marenica’s exploration team in Namibia will begin ground checking and sampling of the anomalies in early 2010.

Work is continuing on final Marenica resource upgrade due in January 2010 following interim upgrade to 122Mt grading 140ppm U3O8 in November 2009

Resource Capital says Marenica’s uranium deposit economic at $50-60/lb, initial exploration results

Resource Capital Research commented on Marenica Energy’s (MEY; ASX: MEY) flagship asset, the Marenica uranium deposit, saying it had the potential to be economic with an enhancement of project optimisation and resolvement of scale and grade issues expected through further exploration success in the final quarter of the year.

The company’s principal asset is the Marenica Uranium Project JV (joint venture) in Namibia in the Damara uranium province, which Resource Capital said was “world class,” hosting 8-10% of the world’s uranium production, including the Rossing, Langer Heinrich and Trekkopje projects.

MEY holds an 80% working interest Marenica, a palaeochannel uranium deposit formerly explored by Goldfields with alaskite primary uranium mineralisation. The deposit’s palaeochannel resource is estimated at 38.6 mlbs (million pounds) of U3O8 (uranium oxide concentrate) grading 0.014% at an 80ppm (parts per million) cut-off with potential for open cut mining covers the historic resource area plus extensions over 10-15km (kilometres).

Drilling in the second half of the current year focused on infill, with extension drilling to the north and west. MEY plans to drill test two other sections of the channel 3km and 3.5 km long 4Q09 (5,000 metres) which have not previously been drill tested. A resource upgrade is expected 1Q10 targeting an Indicated Resource of about 15-20mlbs U3O8.

Preliminary bottle roll alkaline leach tests indicated uranium recoveries or greater than 90% from calcrete and oxidised bedrock. MEY said last month that ore was amenable to 375% upgrade to 0.087% U3O8 from 0.023% by screening, scrubbing and sorting, which could potentially reduce variable processing costs.

There are currently three primary targets in the Marencia area. MEY has drilled 18 holes for 2,831 metres at the Phillipus and Springbok zones in Q3 2009. Phillipus Zone has a radiometric anomaly over 900 metres and 2Q08 was confirmed to contain uraninite, which is easy to process. Drilling intercepts included 16.2 metres at 169 ppm U3O8, while low grade, mineralisation occurred near surface from about 15 metres and was consistent with resource and reserve grades of 0.011% to 0.012% U3O8 at the Valencia alaskite project.

An airborne radiometric survey was completed in October to assist with target identification for 2010. A scoping study for the project is expected in Q2 2010, while the next resource statement is due Q1 2010.

Resource Capital said Marenica had the potential to be economic based on the economics of low grade heap leach deposit, but that would likely come to pass at a uranium price of US$50-60/lb, compared to the current price of US$45/lb. Marenica could optimise the project through further paleochannel exploration success in Q4, which could help resolve the scale and grade issues, with alternatives for project optimisation provided by the proximity of Trekkopje.

Resource Capital said the 2010 exploration drilling offered a blue sky upside and estimated the EV/resource ratio at approximately US$1.70/lb.

West Australian Metals looks to increase grade at Marenica following promising results from probe work

International uranium company West Australian Metals (ASX: WME) has unveiled more excellent results from the final batch of down-hole probe work undertaken within the resource area at its 80%-owned Marenica Uranium Project in Namibia.

The results, which saw shares in West Australian Metals increase 7.7%, or 1c, to 14c, have led the company to schedule a full resource upgrade for the early part of 2010 as the foundation to advance the project towards production.

Preliminary testwork has shown that by screening and scrubbing ore grades could be increased by up to 375% prior to processing.

In the latest results, the down‐hole geophysical probe survey was completed during November, and included probing of previously un‐assessed historical drill‐holes from the main Marenica resource area as well as exploration holes drilled by WME at the regional Springbok prospect.

Significant final down-hole probe results received from historical drill holes at Marenica with better intersections including 14.6m @ 363ppm eU3O8, 19.8m @ 313ppm eU3O8, 12.5m @ 621ppm eU3O8, 7.9m @ 1,256ppm eU3O8 and 13.6m @ 406ppm eU3O8.

The calculated weighted mean of significant intersections for the final 355 re-probed historic holes is 196ppm eU3O8.

This is in excess of the recently announced interim resource grade of 140ppm U3O8.

This interim upgrade was based on results received up to the end of September 2009 (approximately 39% of the total). The January 2010 resource will include all results received since then, including the final probe results announced today.

This announcement follows on from encouraging metallurgical results announced for the Marenica Project last week.
