Stirling Products (ASX: STI) and its joint venture partner, Zodiac Capital Limited, have entered into a conditional agreement with Canadian based Immune Network Limited to accelerate the improved formulation of ImmunoXel.

The new sublingual ImmunoXel tablet formulation has already demonstrated improved effectiveness and potential for accelerated cure rate for TB patients.

Importantly, the Stirling exclusively licensed ImmunoXel product, together with an improved formulation of ImmunoXel developed through recent work by Immune Network, decreases cost of production.

Also, Stirling said improved stability and ease of use is likely to improve the accessibility and availability of the product.

ImmunoXel (Dzherelo) is a multi-herbal extract that has been demonstrated in numerous clinical trials to be extraordinarily effective where provided as an adjunct in all forms of TB treatment, including the drug resistant forms MDR-TB and XDR-TB, as well as for patients with HIV/TB co-infection.

Under the terms of the agreement, Stirling and Immune Network will continue with their respective research and development work.

Following a meeting at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in Washington, USA, Stirling will continue with its plans for a cooperative research agreement with the NIH.

The agreement aims to further establish the effect of ImmunoXel on HIV-related endpoints and Immune Network will produce batches of the new ImmunoXel tablet formulation and continue clinical demonstration trials of the new product.

Stirling said the agreement is "conditional upon Immune Network becoming current in its statutory filings, following which Immune Network will issue to Stirling 20 million shares for the non exclusive marketing rights to ImmunoXel and providing Stirling with direct exposure to potential profitability from Immune Network's other TB immunotherapy, V-5 Immunitor."

Stirling will also subscribe to 5 million Immune shares at US$0.02 per share through the issue of 12.5 million Stirling shares and 333,333 Zodiac shares.

Positive clinical data for ImmunoXel/Dzherelo lozenges has shown that about 90% of all patients supplementing their standard Anti Retroviral TB Treatment with the new ImmunoXel sublingual tablets are cured (sputum clearance of TB) within one month of treatment.

The World Health Organisation (WHO) estimates that globally, about one-third of the world's population is infected with the Mycobacterium tuberculosis bacteria that cause TB, and each year about 9 million people become ill with the disease and 2 million will die from it.

TB patients with HIV are 30 times more likely to die and treatment options for them are limited.

Interestingly, the 2009 WHO annual report on TB indicated that one in four TB deaths is HIV related, which is twice as many as had been recognized previously.

Stirling said the introduction of immunomodulating interventions such as ImmunoXel, have the potential to reverse the crisis situation in current TB management.

The four year framework agreement grants TeleMedCare approval to bypass the traditional tender and lengthy procurement process that is generally associated with product sales to government departments, NHS Trusts and other public bodies.

Stirling Products managing director, Peter Boonen said it was a great endorsement of the TeleMedCare range of products and services to be approved by the UK Department of Commerce lead procurement agency as a Framework Agreement partner.

The award follows the prior establishment of product capability and performance.

"Ultimately, these early initiatives and the removal of the red tape process for procurement of proven product will see the direct benefit flow through to, not only the chronically ill and aged, but also directly to the taxpayer in due course.”

The Patent is for use of the Company’s R-Salbutamol as a method of decreasing fat deposits and is valid until 12 November 2024.

Salbutamol has been safely used in humans in the treatment of respiratory disease for over 30 years, and in its purified form, R-Salbutamol, for over 15 years.
Stirling Products advises of HIV treatment benefits of ImmunoXel in USA Study

Pharmaceutical and Healthcare group, Stirling Products (ASX:STI) has advised the in vitro and in vivo laboratory studies that commenced in 2009 in the USA at a major national US research institute have resulted in a positive determination of certain mechanisms of action of ImmunoXel and opened up potentially new opportunities for its clinical use.

New findings that emerged from these studies now indicate that:

- ImmunoXel did not show any sign of toxicity in the in vitro studies on the peripheral blood mononuclear cells from Rh-macaques in advanced stage of SIV-disease. This finding further supports all the previous clinical data demonstrating the safety of ImmunoXel in patients with HIV and TB.

- ImmunoXel increases the production of cytokine IL2 and proliferation marker K167 in response to exposure to a viral antigen (SIVenv peptides) in vitro in T-cells from chronically SIV-infected monkeys. This could be one of the mechanisms supporting the restoration of depleted CD4 cell counts in patients
with HIV/AIDS.

- ImmunoXel amplifies the in vitro vaccine-specific T-cell proliferation response in a monkey model of HIV vaccination.

Preliminary results from this study indicate the specific profile of ImmunoXel’s immunomodulation that results in its clinical efficacy. First, ImmunoXel restores the ability of T-cells in chronic disease to proliferate, as demonstrated in a chronic HIV model in macaque monkeys. Second, ImmunoXel amplifies antigen-specific immune response in a HIV vaccine model in rhesus monkeys.

Stirling Products managing director, Peter Boonen said: “We are very pleased with the results of these studies which were initiated independently to the Company through one of the world’s leading research institutes in the USA."

"The continuing studies are designed to better understand the ImmunoXel structural, molecular and cellular mechanics. The preliminary study results provided to us strongly support the use of ImmunoXel in the treatment of HIV, and possibly as an adjuvant to certain HIV vaccines under development. This is a particularly important finding as the successful treatment of HIV still currently represents a major unmet challenge with over 35 million people globally living with the condition, he said."

"The situation with TB is equally as urgent and to our knowledge there is no other product development in
either the treatment of HIV or TB that has demonstrated the profile of efficacy that ImmunoXel demonstrates comparative to current treatment regimes.”

Stirling Products has options for development of drug delivery device

Healthcare group, Stirling Products (ASX:STI) will aim to have its Inhalation Drug Delivery Platform device available for testing by Q1, 2011. The technology is in the device pre-production stage and it aims to forge a partnership with a major pharmaceutical company. An earlier version achieved Food & Drug Administration approval.

With a number of blockbuster products coming off patent during an end of product cycle period, Stirling is looking to leverage opportunities to commercialise its device as a superior drug delivery platform for selected drugs.

In a series of meetings around the world, Stirling is now introducing its commercialisation approach to the market and to a potential major Big Pharma partnership.

Stirling has revealed the Stirling device provides benefits not matched in the market:

- Drug transport velocity - matched to natural breathing cycle
- Less deposition on drug delivery pathways
- Aerosol concentration - ~3x other ultrasonic devices
- Delivered drugs have much better & faster absorption – bioavailability due to improved particle size distribution
- Proven to require substantively LESS active drug (10-15% of oral) for the same benefit – potentially less side-effects
- Active drug packaged in unique single-use disposable capsules – IP protection

Pulmonary delivery of drugs has been acknowledged as a more efficient way of drug and vaccine delivery, however development of an optimal pulmonary delivery device has to date eluded the industry despite many hundreds of millions having been spent on delivery device development.

Stirling’s device and patents address the shortcomings that industry has encountered and it believes it its device can provide for improved delivery of existing blockbusters – thereby enhancing the respective products and retaining "premium blockbuster value and status."

A study has forecast an $80-100bn decline in pharma revenue worldwide through to 2014, caused by patients switching to cheaper generic versions of current blockbuster drugs coming off patent. A switch to generics short-term will affect six of the world's ten best selling drugs facing patent loss in the US in the next 2-3 years.

Inhalation and intra-nasal drugs had sales exceeding US$20 billion in 2009, including: Seretide/Advair – GlaxoSmithKline US$7.8 billion (2009) - the patent expires in US Sept 2010 and Europe 2013 – revoked
in UK.

Stirling also has an “in-house” strategy to develop the device in parallel with the big pharma route. Whereby, Stirling would manufacture the device and obtains regulatory approvals. Stirling would source generic versions of off-patent blockbusters from its generics partner – CIPLA (India). Stirling would manufacture ‘safer’ generic drugs in patented “key locked” capsules, locking in a greater share of revenues.

Stirling Products enters into major partnership with Kidney Health Australia

Stirling Products (ASX: STI), a pharmaceutical and healthcare group, has entered into a national partnership with Kidney Health Australia to provide promotional opportunities and support the development of new products.

Kidney Health Week was officially launched yesterday at Admiralty House and officiated by the Governor-General of Australia Ms. Quentin Bryce.

At the event, Vin Harink, chairman of the Kidney Health Australia Board of Directors, announced the partnership which is valued at $750,000 over five years. The partnership represents a major contribution that will help Kidney Health Australia address national community awareness of kidney related disease that claims the lives of over 50 Australians every day.

The company said "the partnership will underpin new Kidney Health Australia initiatives and will provide substantial mutual cross promotion and branding opportunities. It will also support the development of new products specifically for kidney patients through Stirling Health, the pharmacy products and marketing arm of Stirling Products in Australia."

Importantly, the company expects substantial and increased ‘Stirling Health’ brand awareness through the reciprocal cross branding and cross promotion aspects of the partnership that in a stand-alone situation would currently be outside the company’s budgetary provisions.

Peter Boonen, managing director of Stirling Products, said "the community greatly appreciates the work of Kidney Health Australia within a sector of the health market that Stirling regards as critical to the health and wellbeing of Australians."

"Kidney disease is a 'silent killer' - it is often diagnosed when it’s too late. In many cases early detection, prevention, and a healthy lifestyle may halt the disease and slow its progression to end stage," he added.

Stirling Products recently launched Stirling Health, its Australian Pharmacy business, which has commenced to market the first of a range of clinically supported natural products that when combined with a healthy diet and exercise tackle chronic disease prevention and management.

Stirling Products appoints former ResMed director for drug inhalation device unit

Pharmaceutical and healthcare company, Stirling Products (ASX:STI) has appointed former ResMed Limited and Ventracor director, Ross Harricks to commercialise the drug inhalation device.

Harricks worked as marketing executive for the Nucleus Group, then Australia's leading international
medical technology group, Telectronics - pacemakers; Cochlear - bionic ear, Ausonics - ultrasound and Medtel - distribution.

Harricks has been involved at all levels of development and raised funds, guided the design of products, obtained regulatory approvals worldwide (FDA, CE Mark) and built widespread technology adoption and endorsement with leading medical institutions and opinion leaders in US and Europe.

Stirling Products' delivery devices are designed to provide for a dramatically improved safety profile of "blockbuster drugs" when many of these drugs move off patents to become generic products.

Drugs like the Pfizer drug Lipitor is moving off patent to generic next year. Despite a decline, it had global sales of US$11.4 billion in 2009, providing a large opportunity for companies with a unique and differentiated drug delivery platform.

This creates an opportunity for Stirling Products to package the generic version with its drug delivery device to provide a new proprietary package that can be marketed at a significant premium to the other generic versions due to an expected improved safety profile in many cases.
