Value liquidity as much as share pricing in a lousy week, as we can’t loose money forever!

The 6 W’s: Who, what, where, when, why and what of it

Mid-Day: The NASDAQ is UP +36.31 (+1.27%) to 2,902.50 while the Dow is UP +171.76 (+1.37%) to 12,745.03.

Market Commentary: Stocks opened higher Friday, 7/13/12 with the Dow on track to snapping a losing streak … so, should I be spooked by the bewitching day number … NO as stocks rally 1% … despite … Consumer Sentiment!

Stocks have moved mostly higher in trading on Friday, regaining some ground after trending lower over the past week. The major averages have all moved to the upside, with the Dow and NASDAQ rebounding after closing lower in many of the 6 previous sessions.

The strength is partly due to a positive reaction to a report on Chinese economic growth in Q2. While the report showed that Chinese GDP increased at its slowest annual rate in over three years, the rate of growth was not as slow as some had feared. It wasn’t bad enough as we are still co-dependent on EU matters … now; add in the Asian/Chinese component… as I get more confused!

Today’s Gospel:  RegMed stocks opened as flat as yesterday … and seems to be fighting for visibility pre earnings announcements …

We are  … vastly oversold, I see that this bounce could take us into  next week … but between now and Labor Day, the markets are going to be very volatile

Osiris (OSIR) jumps back into the leadership role, today … and still leading in the past month(s) followed by Verastem (VSTM), BioMimetic (BMTI), Tengion (TNGN), Athersys (ATHX), Aastrom (ASTM) and even … Opexa (OPXA).

The NASDAQ was UP at the open on macro news and … it is staying UP as domestic numbers play in or why be down <optimism versus pessimism or just … catching a falling knife so long which is so … debilitating … and bloody …? The CBOE Volatility Index <options activity and fear gauge> traded down falling to 17 <from yesterday’s 18>.

The sector has … MORE green (ups) … and LESS red (downs) and fewer 3-5 fluctuating black (flats)… reiterating … I still believe a dead week of thin trading!

My favorites:

  • Aastrom (ASTM) is UP … $0.04 or +1.94%  to $2.10 … still implementing and executing the common stock/warrant exchange …with an increasing mid-day range of $2.04 – $2.11 from yesterday’s $2.01 – $2.06 with … low volume … of 53K so, far  <versus very small of 116.7K> shares.

  • Cytori (CYTX) is UP at $2.96 <was above $3.00> … +$0.08 or +2.78% in a trading range of $2.88 – $3.05 from yesterday’s $2.79 -$2.98 with …   trading of 135K so, far <versus 210.2K.

  • Osiris (OSIR) is …UP  again …$0.21 on news of  selected by the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) to submit a full proposal for a Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) to fund advanced R&D; +2.08% to $10.32 … some big swings also with profit taking from an increasing trading range of $10.11 -$10.49 from yesterday’s $9.60 – $10.20 after some lower swings, so far volume of 144K shares so far compared to the previous of 3.86.6K>;

  • In reference to Osiris (OSIR) … asked to submit (?) … versus acceptance of proposal? Is there a trend emerging where several companies are moving away from hard core bio-pharma applications which was the only investment thesis a few years ago, both as a hedge, but also since it may be easier to get to revenue?

  • NeoStem (Amex: NBS) … “Boots are still on the Ground” … is UP on usual volume … in its many days of share pricing increases … but, I would look to the new week … for continuation! Trading +$0.009 or +1.33% at $0.684 … in a small and dipping day’s range of $0.632 -$0.69 … from Thursday’s $0.65 -$0.71 with slower volume of 543K so far <versus 2.73M’s previous 1.15M on Thursday>. If you like it this week and then last week – Why not like it for next week!!

Worth mentioning … Athersys (ATHX) is UP and the … DOWN … and UP again $0.07 or +4.58% to $1.60 …historically, NOT holding to any gains … having been down and flat for so long.  I believe ATHX … suffers from a lack of communication as the short sellers … lighten the load but, the enterprise value slips to 29.20M with a market cap of 45.57M … and a dwindling cash position!

Upward moves:

  • Athersys (ATHX),
  • Bioheart (OTC BB: BHRT),
  • BioMimetic (BMTI),
  • Fibrocell (OTC BB: FCSC),
  • ImmunoCellular (Amex:  IMUC),
  • Geron (GERN),
  • International Stem Cell (OTC BB: ISCO);
  • Neuralstem (Amex: CUR),
  • Pluristem (PSTI),
  • Opexa (OPXA),
  • Tengion (TNGN).
  • Verastem (VSTM).

Downward moves:

Flat:

  • BioLife Solutions (OTC BB: BLFS),
  • Cytomedix (OTC BB: CMXI),
  • Cryo-Cell (OTC BB: CCEL);
  • StemCells (STEM),
  • Thermogenesis (KOOL),

EconoDrama: Producer prices unexpectedly rose 0.1% in June despite big drops in energy prices, according to the Labor Department. Analysts expected the index to drop 0.5%.  The Thomson Reuters/University of Michigan July preliminary consumer sentiment index fell to 72, hitting its … lowest level … since last December. Economists had expected a reading of 73.4, against 73.2 in the final June report.
