The fact that oil giant Royal Dutch Shell (LON:RDSB) confirmed in recent weeks its interest in UK shale points to the growing significance of this energy source. Finance chief Simon Henry was quoted as saying Shell was "taking a look" at the potential in the UK.

The group increased average gas production at its Doe Green site near Warrington in Cheshire by about 40%. It also reported that an independent review of the gas potential of its Holywell shale has put the unrisked GIIP estimate at 1.95 trillion cubic feet.
