Greatland Gold said a review of historic data has highlighted the potential for high-grade, near-surface gold mineralisation at several prospects throughout the Black Hills licence including Saddle Reefs, Eastern, Rogers and Northern Granites.

At the Saddle Reefs prospect, strong surface gold mineralisation is present, with rock chip results including 55.6 grams per tonne (g/t), 20.0g/t and 19.65g/t, over an area of around 1,400 metres (m) by 800m.

On the Eastern prospect, there is a linear zone of gold mineralised stratigraphy apparent over a strike of about 4km; broad-spaced drilling along the zone has returned results including 1m at 10.0g/t gold from 16m, 1m at 4.93g/t from 12m and 1m at 3.12g/t from 37m.

Greatland Gold added that both the Rogers and Northern Granites show prospective gold mineralisation at the surface with rock chip results including 50.2g/t, 10.45g/t and 6.9g/t.

"Our first exploration programme at Black Hills marks another important step for Greatland. Sitting near the 27 million ounce Telfer gold deposit and hosting an equivalent style of mineralisation, Black Hills represents a compelling and high priority exploration opportunity for the company,” said Gervaise Heddle, the chief executive officer of Greatland Gold.

"Results from our forensic review of the historic[al] data have further highlighted the licence's prospectivity for multiple zones of high-grade, near-surface gold mineralisation. Importantly, this means that exploring Black Hills' potential will be a relatively low-cost and low-risk endeavour, but one with substantial potential upside,” he added.

Shares in Greatland were up 6.4% at 0.58p in mid-morning trading.

"Results of our recent MMI campaign were better than expected as we identified new targets and confirmed existing known targets across all areas,” said Gervaise Heddle, Greatland Gold chief executive in a statement.

“The next stage is to commence a drilling programme at Ernest Giles, which includes plans for up to thirty drill holes and is scheduled to start before the end of this quarter."

Greatland now intends to conduct a reverse circulation drilling programme at all three areas.

At Meadows, it will drill 24 holes on an anomaly that has yet to be tested, meanwhile, six holes will be completed at Wishbone and Empress.

In afternoon trading, Greatland Gold shares were 5.4% higher at 0.59p.

It added that drill core obtained from this drilling campaign will be subject to several analytical methods to determine the type of mineralisation and will be tested for an extensive range of elements including gold, copper, uranium and rare earths.

The group said that significant alteration and mineralisation intersected by Newcrest in limited historical drilling at Havieron displayed similarities to iron-oxide-copper-gold style deposits, examples of which include the large Olympic Dam and Ernest Henry deposits in central and eastern Australia.

Gervaise Heddle, Greatland’s chief executive officer, commented: "The prospectivity of the Paterson region is widely recognised with several large industry participants engaged in active exploration.

“We believe that this drilling campaign at Havieron may further demonstrate the potential of the eastern edge of the Paterson region to host a new IOCG district in Western Australia."

Investors seemed to agree, with Greatland shares up 2.7% to 0.57p in early morning trading.

It comes after a technical review of the project highlighted potential for a geophysical programme (using induced polarisation) to assist in outlining gold mineralisation in areas untested by previous drilling.

The company added that it has now received all necessary approvals for the proposed survey, now expected to start within the next week. It will cover a strike length of 1.6 kilometres over the immediate gold mineralised zone at Firetower as well as high priority target areas to the west and east.

If the campaign proves successful, the exploration model could be extended across other parts of the project area.

The results will also help plan a future drilling programme which is currently slated for the fourth quarter, but, could be brought forward if ground conditions are suitable.

"This is one of three drilling and exploration campaigns announced by Greatland Gold in 2018, as we continue to deliver on our commitment to advance exploration at our portfolio of projects,” said Gervaise Heddle, Greatland chief executive.

“The new exploration programme at Firetower aims to unlock the true potential of this high grade near surface deposit, which has the potential to extend across four kilometres of strike, and to advance the project towards its exploration target of one million ounces of gold."

The company, in its interim results statement, highlighted that it had successful exploration campaigns at the Ernest Giles, Paterson and Panorama projects.

READ: Greatland Gold commences exploration at Ernest Giles

It noted that it is well financed with £4.5mln of cash and equivalents at the end of December.

Gervaise Heddle, Greatland chief executive, said: “The company is in a very strong financial position to pursue its strategy of advancing exploration across its portfolio of quality projects and identifying and acquiring new underexplored projects, such as the Black Hills gold project in the Paterson region.

“The next 12-18 months will see the company pursue multiple targeted exploration campaigns across its portfolio, including at Ernest Giles where encouraging gold anomalies were identified during Newmont's examination of the project."

Advancing Ernest Giles

At the Ernest Giles project, the company completed geochemistry work which identified multiple gold anomalies and subsequently it has announced plans for a drill programme.

Meanwhile, at Paterson, the company saw encouraging exploration results which it believes indicate that the Havieron copper/gold target may be significantly larger than previously expected.

Panorama’s first exploration campaign in the Pilbara region confirmed the potential for a high grade zone of gold mineralisation in the northern licence while in the southern area it has identified two clusters of gold anomalies.

"The first half of the year was characterised by operational progress across all the company's key projects as well as achieving financial stability through successful fundraising,” Heddle added.

“Specifically, the first half saw strong progress and encouraging results at Ernest Giles, Paterson and Panorama projects.”

Greatland reported a £629,650 loss for the period.

The explorer expects to encounter a potentially large mineralised system, based on the results of detailed aeromagnetic and ground gravity data.

WATCH: Greatland Gold to start drilling at Havieron in April

Modelling of the data, also suggests that only two of six previously drilled holes at Havieron encountered what is deemed to be the primary target and that those two holes were “at the very top” of the mineralised system.

A new programme of drilling will now include four holes, for a total of 2,400 metres, to test the mineralised system and to evaluate gold, copper and other elements.

Approvals are in place for the planned programme, and the work is due to start in April.

"We are very pleased to be moving forward with Greatland's first drilling campaign at Havieron,” said Gervaise Heddle, Greatland chief executive said in a statement on Wednesday.

It is the best data set we have ever had, he said, adding that Newmont’s decision was unfortunate but now Greatland can pursue these good results ‘very aggressively’.

Shares tumbled 57% to 0.92p, which Heddle described as an ‘overreaction’.

Newmont undertook a Deep Sensing Geochemistry survey at Ernest Giles and defined a new large gold anomaly covering an area of approximately 5 kilometres by 1.5 kilometres untested by previous drilling.

READ: Greatland Gold identifies new anomalies at its Panorama project in the Pilbara region of Western Australia

This lies approximately 1 kilometre to the north of Greatland's previous drilling, a perfect jumping off point for further work.

The anomaly also sits perpendicular to the regional geological strike, which suggests a strong structural control on mineralisation.

Elsewhere, several additional attractive gold anomalies have also been identified.

Accordingly, Greatland anticipates that it will be lodging a Programme of Work with the Western Australian Department of Mines and Petroleum in the next two weeks and, subject to approval, anticipates commencing a targeted exploration campaign at Ernest Giles in the first quarter of this year.

“The collaboration between Newmont and Greatland has successfully defined several additional gold anomalies, and we would like to thank Newmont for their efforts,” said chief executive Gervaise Heddle.

“The results of their survey have enhanced our understanding of the project and identified multiple new targets for further exploration work, reinforcing our view that the Ernest Giles project has the potential to host several multi-million-ounce gold deposits. We are well financed to actively progress exploration at Ernest Giles and look forward to reporting progress through the year."

The first cluster has been identified in stream sediment samples and results include 38 parts per billion (ppb) gold; 41 ppb, 48 ppb and 76 ppb. The cluster is over a strike length of one kilometre (km) with a further 5km of strike remaining untested.

The second cluster of anomalous gold was in soil samples, also in the southern licence, and extends over some 200 metres and is located in conglomerates near the base of Mt Roe basalt.

Meanwhile, on the northern licence, rock chip sampling returned results up to 18.45 grams per tonne gold, confirming previously released historical data, indicating a potential high-grade zone of gold mineralisation roughly 3.2 kilometres long.

"The results of the exploration campaign are an affirmation of management's belief in the significant potential of the Panorama project. These results provide us with a good foundation to move ahead with a more extensive exploration programme in 2018," said Gervaise Heddle, the chief executive officer of Greatland.

The shares were up 1.1% at 1.82p in mid-morning.

The company gave investors the results of ground gravity and Mobile Metal Ion (MMI) surveys, and based on analysis it believes the ‘peak gravity response’ at Paterson has not been tested thus far by drilling.

"The MMI and gravity survey results indicate that the Havieron target may be significantly larger than we previously expected,” said Gervaise Heddle, Greatland chief executive.

“Results of both surveys suggest that historical drilling by Newcrest at Havieron may have only intersected a small part of a potentially large, north-west trending mineralised system that may extend for up to 1.5 kilometres.

“Moreover, certain pathfinder elements detected by the MMI survey support our view that Havieron is an Iron Oxide Copper Gold (IOCG) system.”

Heddle added: "We are very pleased with the gravity and MMI results at Havieron, and believe that these low-cost techniques can be deployed next year to screen the multiple prospective regional IOCG targets previously identified by Greatland."

The group announced in November that it was adding to its portfolio in the Paterson region of the Australian state with the acquisition of the Black Hills gold project for A$225,000.

Black Hills lies right next door to Greatland’s Havieron licence and is considered to have high potential for hosting gold deposits similar to the large Telfer gold deposit situated some 30 kilometres (km) to the west.

Greatland bought the Havieron gold project in the Paterson region from Pacific Trends Resources for A$25,000 in cash and the issuance of 65,490,000 ordinary shares in August.

Ground gravity surveys have commenced at the project with the aim of providing data that can be modelled with modern 3D inversion techniques to better define drill targets, the company said in November.

"The ground gravity survey at Havieron represents an important step towards defining drill targets for a drilling campaign currently scheduled for early 2018,” said Gervaise Heddle, chief executive officer of Greatland.

Ernest Giles the flagship

The company’s Western Australian assets also include the Ernest Giles project, which covers more than 1,800 square kilometres of a virtually unexplored greenstone belt that hosts multiple gold exploration targets.

In May, Greatland signed an agreement granting North American gold miner Newmont Mining access to the tenements and exploration database of the project for six months.

Newmont Mining (NYSE:NYM) eventually decided to walk away, which was disappointing and surprising given the strength of the exploration results from the project said Heddle.

WATCH: Greatland Gold in a 'terrific position' after multiple new targets identified at Ernest Giles

What it does mean, he added, is that Greatland now has 100% of a highly prospective project and has received 'a whole bunch of new information essentially for free'.

in particular, a new anomaly near to the Meadows target is an outstanding prospect he believes.

Greatland extends field operations in at Panorama

Elsewhere in the state, Greatland has extended its field operations at the Panorama project in the Pilbara region.

The extended operations aim to assess gold potential, focusing on the possible mineralisation in the southern licence area, and it will involve additional mapping, stream sampling and metal detection.

The Panorama project includes two adjoining exploration licence applications that cover a total area of 130 square kilometres and are prospective for both gold and cobalt mineralisation.

In October, the company announced that a gold prospective conglomerate horizon had been confirmed at two locations within the project area, with strike lengths of 2.6km and 1.9km respectively.

Well-financed

Greatland is well financed to support its exploration projects, having announced in October that its cash pile has grown recently.

Net cash stood at roughly £4mln on October 27, supported by a £750,000 fundraise through the placing of shares in the previous month. The recent conversion of warrants into Greatland shares also brought in about £2.5mln.

Management believes that these funds will facilitate a step change in the scale of the exploration campaigns at the company's key projects.

"The encouraging results from our recent exploration work give us great confidence in our strategy of targeting under-explored areas with significant potential to host sizeable, high quality mineral deposits,” said Heddle.

"Our strengthened cash position means we can aggressively pursue comprehensive and sustained exploration campaigns across all of our key projects over the next two years.”

Results from the ground gravity surveys and the previously completed mobile metal ion sampling campaign are expected by the end of this month, Greatland said in a statement on Tuesday.

"The ground gravity survey at Havieron represents an important step towards defining drill targets for a drilling campaign currently scheduled for early 2018,” said Gervaise Heddle, chief executive officer of Greatland.

"We believe that the Paterson region, host to Newcrest's Telfer gold mine, is highly prospective for multiple large mineralised systems, as demonstrated by our further commitment to the region with the acquisition of the Black Hills gold project announced yesterday," he added.

Greatland will pay A$25,000 of the consideration in cash and the rest will be satisfied by the issue of 6.5mln shares to the vendor, Peter Wiltshire.

Black Hills lies right next door to Greatland’s Havieron licence, and is considered to have high potential for hosting gold deposits similar to the large Telfer gold deposit situated some 30 kilometres (km) to the west.

Previous work on Black Hills by Newcrest Limited, which has worked the Telfer deposit, has outlined several zones of gold mineralisation, with rock chip results of up to 90 grams per tonne (g/t) gold and drill intercepts including four metres at 7 g/t gold,

The acquisition increases the size of Greatland's Paterson project to more than 385 square km prospective for iron-oxide-copper-gold and Telfer style deposits.

"Black Hills represents an important strategic addition to Greatland's significant and expanding position in the Paterson region,” said Gervaise Heddle.

“Historical exploration at Black Hills has demonstrated high grade gold near surface and the potential for the Black Hills licence to host gold deposits similar to Telfer. The acquisition is a continuation of our strategy to target under-explored areas with significant potential and to increase the scale of the company's exploration campaigns at our key projects," he added.

Shares in Greatland were up 6.8% at 1.86p in mid-morning trade.
