The London-listed company made decent headway in the first half of its fiscal year at all of its main projects, which coincided nicely with an uptick in commodity prices.

The price of gold – which, as its name suggests, is Greatland’s main focus – has rallied over the past year or so, buoyed by the global economic and political uncertainty.

The better prices have also led to improved sentiment towards miners as investors come back to a sector they had briefly left when the downturn set in.

“During the first six months of our financial year, general market conditions continued to improve,” chief executive Gervaise Heddle told investors.

“The company believes that accelerating exploration across its portfolio of projects and the acquisition of new projects remains the best path to maximising shareholder value in the short to medium terms as the long anticipated recovery in the commodity sector continues.”

For the six months to 31 December 2016, Greatland reported an operating loss of £608,400 (2015: loss of £227,700).

The increased loss was largely due to higher exploration expenses incurred, as Greatland ramped up operations across all of its projects.

It was most active at its Ernest Giles gold-nickel project in Western Australia where it undertook a wide-spaced drilling campaign.

Results from that came out at the beginning of the second half and identified two large zones of gold mineralisation.

Greatland said progress was also made in the period at its other gold-nickel project in WA, Bromus.

A limited reverse circulation (RC) drilling campaign identified “substantial” sulphide mineralisation, while downhole electromagnetic survets conducted shortly after uncovered “several highly conductive targets”.

Adding to its Western Australian portfolio, Greatland completed the acquisition of the Havieron copper-gold for US$750,000 in September.

The other works of note were carried out at the Warrentinna gold project in Tasmania where more RC drilling extended the continuity of gold mineralisation at the Derby North prospect.

As Heddle alluded to, the explorer is continuing to assess new opportunities to add to its portfolio of projects.

Shares gained 0.02p, or 8%, to 0.29p.

It currently has five main projects; three of which are situated in Western Australia, with the other two in Tasmania.

The three in Western Australia are the Ernest Giles and Bromus gold-nickel projects and the Havieron copper-gold project.

In Tasmania it has the Warrentina gold project as well as the Firetower copper-gold project.

Ernest Giles the most developed

Much of the recent news flow has concerned the massive 1,000 sq. km Ernest Giles licence, which has a large number of prospective targets.

Greatland has so far identified a Western Zone which is 6km in length and 1.5km wide, as well as an Eastern Zone 2km by 1.5km.

The latest news from Ernest Giles is that Greatland is broadening the scope of exploration there. A comprehensive gravity survey across large parts of the project is to be carried out alongside passive seismic technique at the most promising targets.

Chief technical officer Callum Baxter recently said that the project “has the potential to host several major gold camps”, while drill assays in January returned grades of up to 2 grams per tonne (g/t) of gold (Au) with silver also present in some cores.

Shares in the junior have roared away over the past year on hopes that the licence may hold a gold deposit similar to the recent nearby discoveries at Tropicana, 7mln ounces, and Yamarna with over 6mln.

WATCH: Greatland CEO “encouraged” ahead of additional drilling at Ernest Giles Bromus making headlines too

While Ernest Giles is the most advanced project at this moment in time, Greatland is much more than a one-project company.

It’s been making solid progress at the Bromus gold-nickel project in recent weeks, and it is set to drill two holes at the licence between now (20 March) and the end of the month to test a couple of “high priority targets”.

Assuming the drill programme goes to plan, the assays are expected back by the end of April, which should give a better picture of what’s under the ground.

Bromus covers 93 sq. km of “under-explored” terrain and sits in the southern part of a region (the Kalgoorlie-Norsman belt) that is host to over 120mln ounces of gold and numerous nickel deposits.

Similarly, the Havieron copper-gold licence – which Greatland bought for A$750,000 last September – covers around 135 sq. km of underexplored ground in Western Australia.

Although Greatland hasn’t done much with it given the short time it’s owned the licence, previous drilling back in the nineties by Aussie mining giant Newcrest Mining Limited (ASX:NCM) intersected “significant Au-Cu skarn style mineralisation”, Greatland said.

Havieron is located just 40km to the east of Newcrest’s Telfer gold mine in the Paterson Province of Western Australia, which has produced 27mln ounces of gold since operations started back in 1977.

Other big players are also in the area, with Rio Tinto PLC (LON:RIO) recently buying up some ground adjacent to the project.

Tasmanian devil

Following up the recent bullish news from its Western Australian projects, updates from Warrentina gold project in Tasmania haven’t been bad either.

The latest drill results from the project, released at the end of January, showed that gold mineralisation extends further north and further east than originally thought.

All of the 4 metre (m) composite holes drilled struck gold, including 4m at 2.8 g/t (Au) from surface [hole WT040] and 4m at 2.9g/t Au from 20m below the surface [hole WTR038].

“We are very pleased with these latest results at Warrentinna that further demonstrate the potential of this valuable asset,” said chief executive Gervaise Heddle.

Next up on the to-do list at Warrentina is the collection of 1m re-samples from several zones of interest, the results from which are due out towards the end of March.

At Firetower, previous drilling hit 29m at 2.39g/t AU, and 17m at 5.37 g/t.

Working with Metal Tiger in 2017

Greatland signed a deal with fellow London-listed explorer Metal Tiger PLC (LON:MTR) back in November, which will see the pair work together for 12 months to find new projects in Australia and Asia.

Metal will inform Greatland of early-stage exploration projects it considers attractive but too early stage for its own portfolio while Greatland will refer projects it considers too large or complex to Metal Tiger.

If all goes well, the companies may form an Australia-listed company to focus on precious and strategic base metals.

The memorandum of understanding will provide Greatland with a significantly expanded set of attractive opportunities in the precious and strategic base metal sectors over the next few years, Baxter said at the time of the announcement.

The share price

The Greatland share price has more than doubled since this time last year, when it stood at 0.11p or so.

Currently, shares are changing hands for 0.28p. Admittedly, the rebound in the mining sector and the rallying gold price in 2016 went a long way to boosting the company’s value.

To suggest the rapid share price hike was all down to outside forces though would be doing Greatland massive disservice.

The group has worked hard to develop and extend the various deposits at its five main projects.

As I mentioned earlier, investors have been lapping up the continued positive news flow from Ernest Giles in particular, where several nearby discoveries have yielded gold finds of 6mln ounces or more.

<![CDATA[News - Greatland Gold starts drilling at Bromus ]]> http://www.proactiveinvestors.co.uk/companies/news/175046/greatland-gold-starts-drilling-at-bromus-175046.html Metals explorer Greatland Gold PLC (LON:GGP) told investors this morning that it has started drilling at its Bromus gold and nickel project in Western Australia.

The drill programme consists of two holes that will test two “highly conductive targets” which were identified by downhole electromagnetic (EM) surveys back in November.

The key objective of the drilling – which Greatland received approval for at the start of the month – is to determine the nature of these two “high priority” targets.

“We are very pleased to commence drilling at Bromus and follow up on the work done last year that identified two highly conductive targets,” said chief executive Gervaise Heddle.

“In our opinion, both of these high priority targets are prospective for nickel sulphide mineralisation.”

Drilling is expected to be completed within the next two weeks, while assays should be available by the end of April, Greatland said.

Shares closed higher at 0.29p on Friday.

A comprehensive gravity survey across large parts of the will be carried out alongside passive seismic technique at the most promising targets.

One reason is the size of the licence, which is 1,000 sq km, and the large number of prospective targets it contains.

Gervaise Heddle, chief executive said: “In order to best prioritise exploration across multiple attractive targets, we believe that it is important for Greatland to invest in a comprehensive gravity survey of large portions of the Ernest Giles greenstone belt.

Both gravity and passive seismic surveys are relatively inexpensive compared to full-scale drilling campaigns, he added.

Callum Baxter, chief technical officer, added: “Gravity information combined with passive seismic, airborne magnetics and deep sensing geochemistry will enhance our ability to 'see through' the cover sequences and better direct our drilling efforts.

“Our view remains that the Ernest Giles project has the potential to host several major gold camps and we hope that these surveys will further demonstrate the potential of this vast and virtually unexplored greenstone belt.”

Greatland has so far identified a Western Zone 6km in length and 1.5km in width and an Eastern zone 2km by 1.5km at Ernest Giles.

Several of the zones were up to 60m thick and reasonably shallow.

The two targets are relatively shallow, well constrained by modelling and can be drilled from existing drill pads, thereby reducing the overall cost of this drilling campaign, it said.

Gervaise Heddle, chief executive added: “This drilling campaign will target two of the highly conductive targets that were identified by downhole EM modelling late last year and which, in the opinion of Southern Geosciences Consultants Pty Ltd, represent high priority targets for massive sulphide mineralisation."

A 1m re-sampling of recent shallow drilling showed one intercept 4.7g/t gold from 22m within a broader intersection of 5m at 2.4g/t gold from 21m (WTR038) and 1m at 4.1g/t gold from 3m.

These results confirm continuity of the mineralisation over the core of the prospect and highlight the potential to extend the current zone of mineralisation, said Greatland.

Gervaise Heddle, chief executive, added: “These final results from our recent RC drilling campaign at Warrentinna underscore our view that there is considerable scope to extend the current zone of gold mineralisation, particularly to the north and east. “

The Warrentinna project is located in north-east Tasmania and covers an area of 37 square kilometres.

The project hosts several known gold occurrences, including Derby North and Golden Mara where we have intersected significant levels of gold mineralisation, some over 50g/t.

All holes returned over 0.5g/t gold from both Derby North and Golden Mara. Peak result was 4.68g/t gold from Derby North.

Results from single metre samples at Golden Mara (WTR042) were potentially significant when considered with previous results of adjacent hole WTR010 (2008) peaking at 2m at 997ppb gold from 72m in a broad intercept of 8m of 601ppb gold from 69m.

Further work at the project will involve surface sampling and mapping at Derby North to track the mineralised zone to the north followed by planning of additional drill holes to infill and extend the mineralised zone to the north and east.

An application has been lodged with the Western Australian mining department, with the programme to target several highly conductive targets not intersected by a drilling campaign last year.

Two of these targets are relatively shallow, well constrained by modelling and are located close to drill holes BRD001 and BRD003 so the drills will utilise existing drill pads.

Gervaise Heddle, chief executive , said the two targets are particularly appealing because they are well defined, relatively shallow (approximately 100 metres below the surface) and can be drilled using existing drill pads.

“Approvals are expected within the next four weeks and we expect drilling to commence in late March 2017. "

The latest drill results have shown that gold mineralisation extends further north and further east than originally thought.

All of the 4 metre (m) composite holes drilled struck gold, including 4m at 2.8 grams per tonne (g/t) gold (Au) from surface [hole WT040] and 4m at 2.9g/t Au from 20m below the surface [hole WTR038].

“We are very pleased with these latest results at Warrentinna that further demonstrate the potential of this valuable asset,” said chief executive Gervaise Heddle.

“These results highlight the potential for a near-surface open pitable resource to be established at Warrentinna over the medium term.”

Greatland’s team will collect 1m re-samples of several zones of interest next month, the results from which are expected to be reported in March.

In other news, Metal Tiger PLC (LON:MTR) has given notice that it will convert 50mln warrants into Greatland shares for a total amount of £100,000 (0.2p per share).

These new shares are expected to be admitted to trading on or around 6 February.

Heddle added: “We sincerely appreciate the ongoing support of Metal Tiger.

“Greatland and Metal Tiger continue to work closely together as we review new projects and possible collaboration opportunities as part of our New Venture Collaboration announced in November.”

Shares were up a little over 3% to 0.32p.

Having found two potential gold zones at the site from its last drilling programme, it is now preparing to explore the Empress gold target in the north-eastern portion of the licence.

Previous surface sampling at Empress identified a 3km x 1km gold in soil anomaly with a peak value of 338ppb gold (0.338 g/t).

Greatland wants permission for a wide-spaced shallow campaign, including an estimated 5,000 metres of drilling (approximately 20 drill locations).

Gervaise Heddle, chief executive, said: “This new campaign will target a large unexplained gold in soil anomaly at the Empress target which is located in the north-east of the Ernest Giles project area (approximately 50 kilometres north-east of Meadows).

“The MMI gold in soil anomaly at Empress is higher grade and potentially more extensive than that encountered at the Meadows target (peak values of 338ppb Au at Empress and 68ppb Au at Meadows), and we hope that this campaign will help us to explain the unusually high gold in soil anomaly in this part of the Ernest Giles greenstone belt."

“At this stage, we expect relevant Government approvals to be received by the end of February and pre-drilling field operations to commence in early March,” Heddle added.

Greatland believes Ernest Giles project has the potential to host several major gold camps.

Shares in the junior have roared away over the past year on hopes that the licence may hold a gold deposit similar to the recent nearby discoveries at Tropicana,7mln ounces, and Yamarna with over 6mln.

Last week, Greatland reported that it had identified a Western Zone 6km in length and 1.5km in width and an Eastern zone 2km by 1.5km.

Several of the zones were up to 60 metres thick and reasonably shallow.

A new more detailed analysis of the cores has indicated gold grades of up to 2 g/t with silver also present in some cores.

It was the first wide-spaced drill campaign at Greatland’s 100% owned Ernest Giles licence.

Greatland is targeting 5mln ounce deposits and clusters of one million ounces.

The surrounding region is host to the Tropicana discovery, which contains over 7mln ounces and Yamarna with over 6mln.

Shares rose 24% to 0.23p.

The Western Zone is 6km in length and 1.5km in width while the Eastern zone is 2km by 1.5km.

Several of the zones were up to 60 metres thick and reasonably shallow with one 119m below the surface.

Callum Baxter, executive director, said Ernest Giles covers over 1,000 square kilometres of a large greenstone belt that remains virtually unexplored.

“These preliminary results, based on 4 metre compositie samples, confirm our view that this large greenstone belt is highly prospective for gold and may contain similar multiple million ounce gold deposits as have been discovered in other large greenstone belts in Western Australia.”

He said the extent of the mineralisation identified (up to 6 kilometres in length), the wide zones of mineralisation (gold anomalous zones over tens of metres), and the relative proximity to surface of the mineralisation were especially noteworthy.

One-metre re-sampling work is now underway and further work at the project will get underway once this is completed.

The programme, expected to last two weeks, includes plans for six reverse circulation (RC) drill holes each to a depth of 100 metres.

The firm said several targets will drilled at Derby North following up on intercepts such as 26 metres at 2.32g/t (grams per tonne) gold and 5 metres at 29.26g/t gold.

Drilling will also be completed at the Golden Mara area to test for mineralisation below historic workings.

Callum Baxter, Greatland's executive director, said: "The host rocks at Warrentinna are equivalent to those found in the prolific goldfields in Victoria, south-eastern Australia which have to date produced over 50 million ounces of gold.

"Historic drilling at Warrentinna has demonstrated high grade gold mineralisation at the project and results show that mineralisation is from surface, providing potential for an open pitable resource."

Warrentinna lies in north east Tasmania and covers an area of 37 sq km.

Downhole electromagnetics studies have shown several highly conductive targets which were not hit by recent drilling.

Greatland expects to launch a new drilling campaign at the project early next year, using existing drill pads to target two high priority targets.

Exploration can be a highly iterative process and we are very encouraged by the fact that a low cost package of drilling and DHEM modelling has demonstrated the potential for massive sulphide mineralisation at this exciting project.

Metal Tiger will inform Greatland of early-stage exploration projects it considers attractive but too early stage for its own portfolio while Greatland will refer projects it considers too large or complex to Metal Tiger.

If all goes well, the companies may form an Australia-listed company to focus on precious and strategic base metals.

Callum Baxter, Greatland’s executive director, said while mining prices had recovered recently valuations on early stage exploration assets, particularly unlisted private assets, remain relatively depressed.

The memorandum of understanding will provide Greatland with a significantly expanded set of attractive opportunities in the precious and strategic base metal sectors over the next few years, he added.

It is hoped the work - 6,000 metres of wide-spaced drilling - will provide targets for follow up exploration.

Executive director Callum Baxter said: "We hope that this ambitious, wide-spaced RC drilling programme will offer us further insight into a portion of a large greenstone belt that remains relatively unexplored and that this campaign will offer up some interesting targets for follow up exploration.

"We would remind investors that the larger greenstone belts in Western Australia host a significant proportion of the multiple million ounce gold deposits found to date in Western Australia.

"It is our intention is determine whether similar deposits may be hosted within this remote and largely unexplored greenstone belt."

Greatland has also applied for an additional three contiguous licences covering 775 sq km of taking the firm's total project area to over 1,000 sq km and covering more than 120km of strike of gold prospective rocks.

Shares in Greatland rocketed today over 24% to stand at 0.18p.

Greatland will make an initial cash payment of A$25,000 and issue 65.5mln shares worth around A$225,000 to Pacific Trends Resources to acquire the project.

The explorer will then issue a further 145mln shares worth around A$500,000 to Pacific Trends if it decides to commence mining at the project.

“We believe that the initial consideration of A$25,000 in cash and the issuance of 65,490,000 shares represents a very modest initial payment given the potential at Havieron,” said chief executive Callum Baxter.

“Havieron has demonstrated high grade gold and copper mineralisation and provides Greatland with a walk up resource definition drill target in addition to several regional exploration targets.”

Previous drilling back in the nineties by Aussie mining giant Newcrest Mining Limited (ASX:NCM) intersected “significant Au-Cu skarn style mineralisation”, Greatland said.

Havieron is located just 40km to the east of Newcrest’s Telfer gold mine in the Paterson Province of Western Australia, which has produced 27mln ounces of gold since operations started back in 1977.

Other big players are also in the area, with Rio Tinto PLC (LON:RIO) recently buying up some ground adjacent to Havieron.

Shares were up 10% to 0.2p.

Notable grades of silver, zinc, cadmium and sulphur were unearthed with low level nickel intercepts as well.

Greatland will be conducting downhole electromagnetic activity over the next few weeks to determine the location, size and orientation of buried conductive bodies.

Callum Baxter, executive director, said: "Initial results from the limited drilling campaign recently conducted at Bromus are indicative of a polymetallic VMS-style system.

“Most notably, the association of silver, zinc, cadmium and sulphur that was detected in both BRD002 and BRD004 is relatively unusual in the region, and Greatland intends to do further work over the next few weeks, including downhole EM, in order to better ascertain the nature and size of the mineralization.”

A new drilling programme is shortly to get underway at Warrentinna to test for extensions to known gold mineralisation along strike and at depth.

Six reverse circulation holes will undertake 600 metres of drilling to follow up on an earlier intercept which hit 26 metres at 2.32 grams per tonne gold and 5 metres at over 29 grams.

Meanwhile, basic field activities will be commenced at two relatively unexplored areas of the Firetower project.

Previous drilling at Firetower hit 29 metres at 2.39 grams per tonne gold and 17 metres at 5.37 grams.

'We are pleased to begin a more active phase of exploration at Greatland's Tasmanian gold projects,” said Greatland executive director Callum Baxter.

“The Warrentinna and Firetower gold projects both possess significant upside exploration potential and we believe that, given the current gold price environment, now is the right to take a more aggressive approach to exploration on these projects.”
