City heavyweight JP Morgan Cazenove has raised its price target for Gemfields (LON:GEM) following the better-than-expected returns from the company’s recent emerald auction.

Repeating its ‘overweight’ recommendation, the broker bumped its valuation up to 44 pence a share from 38 pence previously.

At 11.15 am the stock was changing hands at 35.56 pence, down 0.31 pence. However in the past year it has more than doubled in value.

In a note to clients analyst Alexander Mees said: “Gemfields is consolidating its position as the leading supplier of rough emeralds to the global luxury goods market.

“As demand intensifies for the gemstone, complemented by increased marketing, we believe the company will deliver significantly enhanced returns.”

Gemfields raised US$26.2 million in the rough emerald auction it held last week in Singapore, bringing the cumulative total for the financial year so far (which runs to June 30) to US$68.9 million.

Of the 32 companies attending the auction of predominantly medium to higher quality rough emeralds, 29 placed bids.

It sold 690,000 carats of the 770,000 placed on offer at an average of US$38 per carat.

“Gemfields’ recent auction achieved considerably higher returns than we had expected and reinforces our confidence in the long to medium-term sustainability of sales prices above $20 per carat for higher quality gems,” JP Morgan Cazenove’s Mees.

The company's principal asset is the 75 per cent-owned Kagem emerald mine in Zambia, the world's largest emerald mine.

In addition to the Kagem emerald mine, Gemfields has a 50 per cent interest in the Kariba amethyst mine in Zambia.

It also owns controlling stakes in a highly prospective ruby deposit in Mozambique and licences in Madagascar including ruby, emerald and sapphires deposits.

In all, the auctions generated US$68.9 million in sales.

Of the 32 companies attending the auction of predominantly medium to higher quality rough emeralds, 29 placed bids. The company sold 0.69 million carats of the 0.77 million placed on offer.

While the Singapore auction of July 2011, which comprised of generally superior quality material overall, yielded US$42.71 per carat, the overall quality characteristics of the emeralds placed on offer at last week's auction were more similar to those offered in the December 2010 auction in Johannesburg.

“The resultant average prices of US$38.25 per carat achieved at the most recent auction thus demonstrates a quality-for-quality increase of some 46 per cent over the 15 month period and provides a clear indication of robust growth in both achievable prices and demand for emeralds in general, and Gemfields ethical emeralds in particular,” the gemstone miner said in a statement.

Gemfields' next auction of predominantly lower quality rough emeralds is scheduled for June 2012 in Jaipur, India.

Chief executive Ian Harebottle said: "Gemfields is delighted to announce another set of very encouraging auction results, testament to the success of our marketing initiatives and the consistency of the emeralds produced at our Kagem mine.“

Coloured gemstones specialist Gemfields (LON:GEM) is generating strong demand from its innovative emerald marketing strategy, says research house Edison.

Revenue in the current year to date is US$42.6 million (£27 million) with a high-quality auction scheduled for 19-24 March and the probability of a further auction in June.

Edison adds that the miner’s current focus is to identify resources to support long-term production at its producing Kagem emerald mine together with assessment of both underground exploitation and new open pits.

But with Gemfields established as a benchmark in emeralds, management is confident it can develop further identified opportunities in the coloured gemstone sector, says Edison.

These include extensive emerald targets in Zambia, Montepeuz, a major ruby deposit in Mozambique where production is anticipated by year-end, and coloured gem prospects in Madagascar.

Other interests and prospects are constantly under review said the research house.

Edison values Gemfields at 38p, based on an NPV 10 per cent on emerald production and price projections from current operations, but says there is considerable upside potential from any potential new developments.

For the first half of the current year, underlying earnings were US$32.2m with cash at US$32.4m and an at-cost inventory of US$22m.

For the full year to June, Edison is projecting revenues of US $77.5 million, profits of US$40.6 million and earnings of 6.2p.

Shares rose 1 per cent to 35.6 pence.

The company has completed its acquisition of a controlling interest of the deposit based in the Montepuez district of the Cabo Delgado province.

The licences for a period of 25 years were formally issued by the Mozambican government on 23 February to a new company, Montepuez Ruby Mining Limitada, in which Gemfields holds a 75% interest.

The new project comprises mining and exploration rights covering approximately 34,000 hectares and is believed to be potentially one of the largest ruby concessions in private hands in the world.

Gemfields said that mining had previously taken place on a relatively small and informal scale and activities will now be expanded considerably.

Gemfields’ (LON:GEM) decision to embark on a significant waste movement programme was reflected this morning in a rather subdued quarter.

The group, which owns the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia, said the initiative will enhance the performance and efficiency of the operation.

As such it is predicting “significantly increased production” in the final two quarters of its financial year.

With around US$32 million in the bank the group is in a financially comfortable position to carry out the work to develop the operation.

An update for the three months ended September 30 revealed production was 4.9 million carats compared with 10.8 million in the previous quarter.

The grade was 205 carats, down from 500 carats and unsurprisingly production costs rose to 79 cents a carat from 32 cents.

Chief executive Ian Harebottle said: "Gemfields' mine to market strategy continues to reap benefits for Gemfields, its products and its partners.

“This is clearly evidenced in the firm demand for coloured gemstones stemming from both developed and emerging markets alike.

“Gemfields' healthy cash position has supported the company's decision to actively pursue the development of other assets in its portfolio and to increase the scale of operations at its Kagem mine, where operational performance will continue to improve post the current high wall pushback project.

“Significantly increased production outputs are anticipated in the last two financial quarters."

Results from Gemfields (LON:GEM) were hailed as “sparkling” by research boutique Edison Investment Research.

Analyst Julian Emery, who reckons the shares are worth 36 pence each, says that the results confirmed a successful year with massive improvements in production, grade and costs. This, he says, has fuelled a strong balance sheet and underpinning management plans to pursue growth, market share and build out resource.

“This was an outstanding year, and markets in the current year will be more unpredictable.

Nonetheless Gemfields reports that pricing and demand is holding up well.

“Although the current year will likely see lower carat production (after last year’s record level), as the company undertakes a major high wall push-back project at Kagem, this will, on completion, enhance open pit resource, add scope for underground development and augment production and quality.”

The analyst’s 36 pence valuation implies that the group’s shares could rise more than 76 per cent from the current market price of 21 pence.

Emery’s said his valuation is based on production and price projections from current operations and underpinned by a strong balance sheet, and beyond that he continues to see potential upside from exploration and operating initiatives.

Earlier this week, in Gemfields’ results statement, chief executive Ian Harebottle said: The past financial year has been an outstanding one for Gemfields.”

“We have doubled revenues, improved our profit eightfold and, following our record rough emerald auction in July, we have started the new financial year strongly.

“Production is up, costs are well contained and increasing demand from both the trade and consumer markets alike confirms the success of our various marketing and promotional efforts.
Zambia and Madagascar-focused coloured gemstone producer Gemfields (LON:GEM) delivered an eightfold increase in profits and more than doubled its revenues during the year to June 30.

Revenue from sales of the firm’s emerald and beryl gems increased to US$40.2 million from US$19.9 million in 2010, while profit after tax came in at US$21.4 million (2010: US$2.6 million), driven by record annual production of 33 million carats (2010: 17.4 million carats).

The estimated cost of Gemfields’ cost of emerald inventory was slightly greater at US$18.7 million, compared with US$16.6 million in 2010. Meanwhile, the average monthly operating costs at the firm’s Kagem mine were contained at approximately US$1.1 million.

Since the end of June, Gemfields said it completed a successful rough emerald auction that yielded record sales of US$31.6 million. The firm has also recently begun various expansion, exploration and other growth projects within its Zambian and Madagascan licence areas.

Gemfields( LON:GEM), the Zambia-focused gemstones miner, hailed record annual production with a jump in grades per tonne and a hefty cut in production costs.

In an operational update for its fourth quarter and full year to June 2011, the company says annual production soared 90 per cent to 33 million carats versus the previous year.

Grade for the year came in at 478 carats per tonne versus 286 in prior year, and per carat production costs were reduced by 41 per cent to US$0.43 per carat.

Rock handling costs for the year, meanwhile, fell 25 percent from US$4.92 to US$3.70 per tonne.

The final quarter of the year alone produced 10.8 million carats at a grade of 500 carats per tonne and a unit cost of US$0.32 per carat.

At its recent July auction of high quality rough emeralds, the company placed 1.07 million carats and successfully sold 0.74 million carats to generate record sales of US$31.6 million.

Compared to its December 2010 auction, average per carat prices at that July 2011 sale improved by 63% from US$ 26.20 per carat to US$ 42.71 per carat.

In all, the company has completed seven auctions in the past two years, generating total revenue of US$87.5 million.

Gemfield's 75 percent owned Kagem mine - the single largest emerald mine in the world- is presently the company’s only operating emerald mine.

Production over the final quarter to 30 June 2011 was “robust” at Kagem, with unit rock handling costs totalling ust US$2.70 per tonne.

Gemfields expects the stripping ratio at Kagem to increase in the short to medium term as areas of overburden are mined in order to expand the levels of available ore. This will have a further positive impact on future total mining costs.

The company also notes, however, that illegal mining activity within the boundaries of the Kagem mining licence is not yet fully resolved. It continues to work with key ministries to alleviate this challenge.

Gemfields cash position at the end of June 2011 stood US$13.6 million in cash, prior to receipt of the US$31.6 million from the most recent auction.

Kagem Mining Ltd, in which Gemfields has a 75 percent interest, is debt free.

Ian Harebottle, chief executive of Gemfields, said: "Continued price increases for rough diamonds are a good indicator of the strength of the luxury goods sector as a whole.

He added: “As a relatively new and informal sector coming off a low base, coloured gemstones in general and emeralds in particular are expected to enjoy even greater scope for increases in demand, which is clearly evident from our recent auction results.

“Gemfields is well positioned to achieve maximum benefit from present trends and feels these key drivers are likely to persist in supporting the popularity of Gemfields' products."

Gemfields (LON:GEM) says it remains on track to deliver a "robust" performance in the current financial year, as it reported "pleasing" production figures.

The firm revealed that gemstone production in the first nine months of the current financial year (to 30 June 2011) stood at 22.2mln carats - compared to 17.4mln carats for the entire 12 months of the previous year.

Carats include both emerald and beryl.

Releasing an an update today for the three months to 31 March 2011, the company said that 3.5 million carats were produced during the quarter compared to 5.9 million carats in the previous quarter.

While total production for the quarter was lower than was achieved during the previous quarter, most of the emeralds produced were of a higher quality (good colour and clarity), and were likely to deliver above average per carat prices when sold at auction, said Gemfields.

It said that production figures in the first six months were "pleasing" and the anticipated rains during the March quarter supported a short term shift in focus to added waste mining and infrastructural development.

Operating costs were adversely affected by the rainy season, higher stripping ratios, and increased infrastructure work, it said.

The firm also made a one-time payment to harmonise the previously complex employee benefit structures into a single system at the Kagem Mine in Zambia - 75 percent owned by Gemfields.

CEO Ian Harebottle said the company was "particularly pleased by the exceptional quality" of our gemstone production this quarter.

"While the rainy season, lower ore yields, added development work and a payment in respect of employee harmonisation resulted in a modest overall production performance, these results are, however, in line with our overall development plans and the fluid deposition characteristic of coloured gemstone mining," he said.

"We remain well on track to deliver a robust performance for the current financial year" - Harebottle

He added that demand for the firm's emeralds and beryl supported, among other things, by the launch of the 'Uniquely You' advertising campaign in the Indian market continued to grow.

"We look forward to the outcome of our rough emerald auction in Singapore in July 2011 and the continued positive impact that supply of this nature will have on our sector," he said.

As at 31 March 2011, Gemfields had US$ 20.6 million in cash and Kagem Mining Ltd, in which Gemfields has a 75 percent interest, was debt free.

Gemfields (LON:GEM) shares climbed more than 10 percent in early deals after it updated investors on its strong performance in the second quarter.

The company operates the 75 percent owned Kagem mine in Zambia which is the largest emerald mine in the world.

In December Gemfields had its most successful gemstone auction to date. It generated US$19.6 million from the auction, which is almost as much as a whole year's worth of revenue - revenues were 19.9 million in the twelve months ended 30 June 2010.

Similarly Gemfields’ production followed a similar pattern with 18.7 million carats being produced in the first six months - it produced 17.4 million carats in the 12 months ended 30 June 2010.

In the final three months period, ended 31 December 2010, it produced 5.9 million carats, achieving grades of 369 carats per tonne. It had unit production costs of US$0.56 per carat - compared to an historic average of US$0.64 per carat.

"Kagem has delivered a phenomenal quarter in terms of sales and enjoyed another robust production quarter,” chief executive Ian Harebottle said.

“We look forward to the forthcoming auction in Jaipur and the encouraging outlook for the company and our partners in the coloured gemstone sector.”

At the end of the quarter Gemfields had US$15.6 million in cash, and its 75 percent owned subsidiary Kagem Mining Ltd paid off all its bank loans and leases and it is now debt free.

Gemfields PLC (LON:GEM) achieved revenue of US$19.6 million in the December 6-10 auction held in Johannesburg, a new record for a single auction and exceeding the US$18.7 million generated from the three previous emerald auctions held during the current 2009/10 financial year.

The auction of predominantly higher quality rough emeralds was attended by 32 companies drawn from India, Israel, Germany and the United States. It saw 0.87 million carats placed on offer, with 0.75 million carats being sold.

The emeralds sold at the auction achieved an average of US$26.20 per carat, a price increase of some 180 percent over the US$9.35 achieved at the July 2010 auction in London.

The group noted that coloured gemstone deposits are "pockety" in nature, and that accordingly, the grade and quality of production varies widely from month to month. Gemfields’ flagship Kagem mine in Zambia experienced a period of high quality production which led to significant unit price increases.

In particular, an exceptionally rare and magnificent 720 carat emerald crystal set a new Gemfields record in terms of the achieved value per carat.

Gemfields has now completed five auctions in the past 18 months, realising revenues totalling US$45.8 million.

Gemfields' next auction of predominantly lower quality rough emeralds and beryl is scheduled to take place during March 2011.

“While evidence exists for some resistance to diamond price increases in certain sectors, demand for emeralds has strengthened across all major markets, providing a level of confidence for continued increases in achievable emerald prices throughout 2011,“ the group said in a statement.

Chief executive Ian Harebottle: "This was a highly successful auction indicative of the quality of some of our recent production and strong corroboration for our strategy of bringing a regular and reliable supply of ethically-mined emeralds and beryl, from a responsible source, to the market.

“Moreover, our pioneering and proprietary emerald grading system has set new standards and continues to mitigate pricing risk for our clients. The record auction follows Kagem's recent record quarterly production of 12.8 million carats and underpins our belief that Gemfields is entering into an exceptionally exciting phase of its development.”
