Gemfields PLC

Gemfields PLC

Gemfields plc is the world's leading supplier of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones and is quoted on the AIM division of the London Stock Exchange (ticker: GEM)

Gemfields is the operator and 75% owner of both the Kagem emerald mine in Zambia (believed to be the world's single largest producing emerald mine) and the Montepuez ruby mine in Mozambique (one of the most significant recently discovered ruby deposits in the world). In addition Gemfields also holds a 50% interest in the Kariba amethyst mine in Zambia, as well as controlling interests in various other gemstone mining and prospecting licenses in Zambia, Mozambique, Colombia, Ethiopia, Madagascar and Sri Lanka.

Gemfields' outright ownership of Fabergé an iconic and prestigious brand of exceptional heritage enables Gemfields to optimise positioning, perception and consumer awareness of coloured gemstones, advancing the wider group's "mine and market" vision.

Gemfields has developed a proprietary grading system and a pioneering auction and trading platform to provide a consistent supply of quality coloured gemstones to the global downstream markets. This is a key component of the Company's business model which the Directors believe has played an important role in the appropriate distribution and associated resurgence of the global coloured gemstone sector.

Big picture - Why invest in Gemfields PLC

Gemfields PLC Snapshot

Gemfields is the world’s leading supplier of responsibly sourced coloured gemstones. But we prefer to think of ourselves as more than just a mining company. We are pioneers at an exciting new frontier where mining, marketing, exploration and ethics meet.

We oversee the mining and marketing of coloured gemstones from some of the world’s finest gemstones deposits and we do so responsibly and transparently. We have mining operations in Zambia for emeralds and amethysts, in Mozambique for ruby and corundum, and we are actively examining opportunities in other key gemstone countries around the globe.

We have a proven track record of delivering a consistent supply of professionally graded, uncut coloured gemstones to world markets through a programme of private auctions. In response to strong demand for consistent and trusted sources of supply of cut and polished coloured gemstones, we also opened a division specialising in the sale of cut and polished gemstones which has been met with great enthusiasm on both sides of the supply chain.

Gemfields’ acquisition of Fabergé in January 2013 aligned the world’s largest coloured gemstone producer with one of the world’s most recognisable and iconic heritage brands. The acquisition enables Gemfields to advance its vision for coloured gemstones to the next level, harnessing the Fabergé name to create a global coloured gemstone champion.

Strategy

Vision

Our Vision is to become the global ‘Coloured Gemstone Champion’. Benefiting from Gemfields’ ability to be a price maker rather than a price taker. Based on a seven-year track record of direction, delivery and success

Strategy

Gemfields' strategic goals include:

  • Leading the way in coloured gemstone exploration, operational efficiencies and mining practices
  • Promoting and repositioning the coloured gemstone industry alongside other luxury goods
  • Ensuring a consistent supply of professionally-graded coloured gemstones to world markets
  • Promoting disclosure, transparency, education and certification across the coloured gemstone industry to engender greater consumer trust

We aim to turn the coloured gemstone business into a transparent industry allowing investors, local communities and national economies to benefit from our approach and expertise. Gemfields believes in, and sees significant benefit in, being fully transparent about our dealings and partnerships. Full disclosure of information and transparency in our business process is a crucial factor in our success, and in the growth of the wider industry. Our mining ethics go beyond mere compliance and we have consistently set new standards within the coloured gemstone sector.

The Coloured Gemstone Industry

Coloured gemstones have been treasured since before the beginning of recorded history. And yet, in jewellery terms, we have lived through a period in which clear stones have dominated the market to an unprecedented extent. The second half of the 20th century was, if you like, the golden age of the white diamond. However, it appears we are once again rediscovering our love of colourful jewels.

Historically, the coloured gemstone industry has been fragmented and undercapitalised, mostly serviced by small independent artisanal producers, scattered around the globe. This has meant that supply has not always been consistent or reliable, prices have fluctuated and the provenance of the gems has often been difficult to determine. Formal marketing and promotion has been scant.  Such conditions have benefited neither producers nor consumers. But it is a situation that Gemfields has set about changing – and one that presents an exceptional business opportunity.

We are working to bring together resources and expertise to integrate this long-overlooked sector and thereby to ensure a consistent supply of premium-quality, responsibly supplied coloured gemstones. As is evidenced by the record prices being achieved at auction today, it is clear that demand for precious coloured gemstones is strong.

Gemfields has a proven track record of delivering a consistent supply of high-quality rough coloured gemstones, all of which are painstakingly sorted and precisely graded according to our proprietary grading system.

In March 2011 we undertook research in Britain, the United States and Europe, examining the supply of cut and polished coloured gemstones. The results unequivocally highlighted the strong demand for consistent and trusted sources of supply of cut and polished coloured gems.

Partly due to the historic lack of consistent supply, and partly due to uncertainty about their provenance or level of treatment, jewellery designers and retailers alike had at times been reluctant to work with or sell coloured gemstones.

We saw this as a clear opportunity to bring confidence and stability to a hitherto erratic supply chain and to demonstrate that responsibly supplied, premium-quality coloured gemstones could consistently be relied upon.

As a result, Gemfields opened a new division specialising in the sale of cut and polished coloured gems. Having already established close relationships with the buyers of our uncut gemstones, we were ideally placed to source the highest-quality cut and polished gems, often from the very clients who purchase our uncut gems.

Since its inception in London in 2011, the service provided by our Cut-and-Polished Sales Team has been met with great enthusiasm on both sides of the supply chain. Indeed, such has been the demand for our tailored polished gem service, that additional offices have since been opened in New York, Cape Town and Mumbai, each bringing Gemfields’ impeccably sourced coloured gemstones to the world.
